Peer influence is a dynamic force in the ongoing process of shaping
and understanding oneself. The interactions with peers contribute
significantly to the development of one's identity, beliefs, and
behaviors.
Desiderius Erasmus a 15th-16th Century humanist known for his writings such as “The
Praise of Folly” touched upon the idea that an individual are shaped by their social
environments. Erasmus emphasized the importance of associating with virtuous and
wise friends, suggesting that the company of one can keep influence moral and
intellectual development.While it is not psychology in the modern sense, Erasmus
recognized the impact of social interaction on shaping one’s character and values,
continuity to early insights into the role of peers in personal growth.
According to Sociologist and Philosopher George Herbert Mead According, individuals
learn to see themselves from the perspective of others, a process he called "taking the
role of the other." This socialization is crucial for the development of a coherent self-
identity.
In navigating the intricate web of peer influence, it becomes crucial to
distinguish between healthy, positive influences that contribute to
personal growth and those that might compromise authenticity.
