COMPOSITION WRITING

INFORMAL LETTER
LESSON OUTCOMES:
• Learners should be able to define an
informal letter.
• Learners should be able to state and
explain the features of an informal letter.
• Learners should be able to write an
informal letter without much difficulties.
DEFINITION OF A LETTER
• A letter is a piece of hand written or printed text
addressed to a recipient and typically sent by
mail. They are three main types of letter
commonly known as formal, semi- formal and
informal.
DEFINITION OF AN INFORMAL
LETTER
• These are letters which we write to
our friends, relative or people of our
age. We therefore use the friendly,
correct and acceptable language.
FEATURES OF AN INFORMAL
LETTER
• The senders address- this should be
written at the top right hand side of the
page. This letter must have only one
address.
• Date- this should be written below the
address, but they should be a line space
between the address and the date.
CONTINUATION
• Salutation- this begins next to the opposite side
of the paper and there should be a line space
after the date. Specify whether sir, madam or
name of the person
• Opening paragraph- this comes just below the
salutation. These letters usually begins with an
inquiring of the health of the person you are
writing to.
CONTINUATION
• Main body- the main body is divided into
paragraphs. It is in the main body that you write
your message as well as answering questions from
your friend’s last letter.
• Conclusion- this is the last paragraph of the letter.
End with comments that will encourage your friend.
• Closing- this begins about half way across the
page. You can end with cheers then your name.
CONTINUATION
• Pay attention to spellings and punctuation
• Use correct grammar
• Be neat
• Use simple friendly English
• Indent your paragraphs

• Right now you are in a village and you have
passed to go to grade 8. you need your uncle
who is in Living stone to send you some money
for school fees which is up to k600. This amount
will cater for the school uniforms. Write a letter
to him.
