QUALITY OF CEMENT

INTRODUCTION

 an inorganic material which has adhesive and cohesive properties

 used to support human civilization specially for development since many decades

 main function of cement is to act as a binder

Raw Materials

 Calcareous materials
Compounds of Ca and Mg

 Argillaceous materials
mainly silica, alumina, and oxides of iron

 Auxiliary components
machinery for cement production
High Quality Cement

 Provides strength to masonry

 Stiffens or hardens early

 Possesses good plasticity

 Easily workable

 Good moisture-resistant
Manufacture of Cement

 mining of raw materials like limestone and clay, which are then ground into a fine
powder
 heating in a cement kiln to a sintering temperature as high as 1450 °C.
 the clinker is ground in a cement mill into a fine powder
 combined with gypsum
 After mixing water and aggregates with the powdered cement concrete for
construction is created.
Tests for determining quality of cement

 Fineness test
Density of cement is known
More the density higher the cement quality

 Strength test
After few months of setting of cement, the strength of cement is checked
 Colour test of the cement
Uniform grey colour cement has higher quality than that of the cement
having non uniform colour

 Lump test
In cement, lumps are formed due to the absorption of moisture. Lumps
formation denotes low quality of cement.
Conclusion

 Ensures the logical use of the available materials after testing their properties and
reducing the cost

 Quality of cement can be determined by several test mentioned above.

 Quality of cement is necessary to be determined because it is the best way to build

high quality infrastructures with more shelf life.
