the four types of river erosion

• Hydraulic action- This is the sheer power of the water as it smashes
against the river banks. Air becomes trapped in the cracks of the river
bank and bed, and causes the rock to break apart

• Abrasion- When pebbles grind along the river bank and bed in a sand-
papering effect.
• Attrition- When rocks that the river is carrying knock against each
other. They break apart to become smaller and more rounded.
• Solution- When the water dissolves certain types of rocks.
3 way of how a river transports its load

• Solution minerals are dissolved in the water and carried along in

solution
• Suspension fine light material is carried along in the water.
• Saltation small pebbles and stones are bounced along the river bed.
• If the gradient of the river's course flattens out, the river will deposit
its load because it will be travelling a lot slower. When a river meets
the sea a river will deposit its load because the gradient is generally
reduced at sea level and the sea will absorb a lot of energy.
• Sediment in rivers gets deposited as the river slows down. Larger,
heavier particles like pebbles and sand are deposited first, whilst the
lighter silt and clay only settle if the water is almost still.
