Safety Procedures in handling and using BJTs

To prevent transistor damage and avoid electrical shock, you should observe the
following precautions when you are working with transistorized equipment:
1. Test equipment and soldering irons
2. Always connect a ground
3. Ensure test voltages do not exceed maximum allowable voltage
4. Check for Temperature
5. Use Proper Tools When Replacing
6. All circuits should be checked for defects before replacing a transistor.
7. The power must be removed from the equipment before replacing a transistor.

Transistor Substitutions
Find basic parameters of the transistor to be replaced to find the equivalent transistor
with same or slightly high parameters.
1. Semiconductor material used (germanium or silicon)
2. Polarity (NPN or PNP)
3. Function (switching, power supplies, audio amplifier, RF amplifier...etc.)
4. Package (location of E,B,C and mounting)
5. Maximum voltage parameters
• Collector-Emitter voltage-Vce
• Collector-Base voltage-Vcb
• Emitter-Base voltage-Veb
6. Maximum collector current (Ic)
7. Current gain (hfe)
8. Frequency limit
9. Power dissipation
