• Internal / Domestic Trade: Buying and selling
of goods and services between two persons/
companies within same country is known as
trade

• Internal trade is also known as Home trade. It
is conducted within the political and
geographical boundaries of a country.
• It can be at local level, regional level or
national level.
• Hence trade carried on among traders of
Delhi, Mumbai, etc. is called home trade.

• Types of Domestic Trade:
1.Wholesale Trade : It involves buying in large
quantities from producers or manufacturers
and selling in lots to retailers for resale to
consumers.
The wholesaler is a link between manufacturer
and retailer Wholesaler act as a intermediary
between producers and retailers.

2. Retail Trade: It involves buying in smaller lots
from the wholesalers and selling in very small
quantities to the consumers for personal use.
The retailer is the last link in the chain of
distribution.
There are different types of retailers small as
well as large. Small scale retailers includes
hawkers, pedlars, general stores, etc.

• International Trade: Buying and selling of
goods and services between two nations is
called international trade

• Types of International Trade:
1. Import
2. Export
3. Entrepot Trade

1. Import Trade : When a trader in home
country obtains or purchase goods from a
trader located in another country, it is called
import trade. For e.g. a trader from India
purchase goods from a trader located in
China.

2. Export Trade : When a trader from home
country sells his goods to a trader located in
another country, it is called export trade. For
e.g. a trader from India sells his goods to a
trader located in China.

3. Entrepot Trade : When goods are imported
from one country and then re-exported after
doing some processing, it is called entreport
trade. In brief, it can be also called as re-
export of processed imported goods.
Re-export can be to the same country or to the
third country.

Feature of Global Trade:
1.Free flow of goods and services in all the
countries
2. Free flow of capital in all the countries
3. Free flow of information and technology in all
the countries
4. Free movement of people in all the countries
5. The same conflict-solving technique in all the
countries

What percentage of world trade is by sea?
• Maritime transport is essential to the world's
economy as over 90% of the world's trade is
carried by sea and it is, by far, the most cost-
effective way to move en masse goods and
raw materials around the world.
• Sea trade are handled by the port, hence ports
play an important role in global trade

Container Trans-shipment: Some containers are
moved from origin port to destination port via a
mid port. Such containers are called trans-
shipment containers.
Some ports in the world attract very large no. of
trans-shipment containers, these ports are
known as trans-shipment hub ports. For exp.
Port of Singapore, Port of Colombo etc.

1. Location on busy shipping route
