PRE-TENSIONING
When we say “Pre”, meaning it’s before, so steel wires are tensioned before
concrete is placed and hardened.
It is common prefabrication technique, where the resulting concrete element is
manufactured remotely from the final structure location and transported to site
once cured.
It is achieved by either pretensioning or posttensioning processes. In
pretensioning, lengths of steel wire, cables, or ropes are laid in the empty mold
and then stretched and anchored.
Where is Pre-Tensioning used?
Pre-tensioning places the reinforcing strands under tension before the
concrete is cast. When the concrete is sufficiently hardened, the strands
are released, putting the concrete element into compression due to the
adhesion forces between concrete and strands.
