Reference check refers to a
recruiting process method used by
hiring managers/recruiters to get
more information about a candidate
by contacting his/her previous
employers, schools etc.
With reference checks, you can learn
more about applicants, such as their:

• Employment history
• Educational background
• Job qualifications
• Strengths and weaknesses
• Behavior
Steps on How to Conduct
Reference Check

1. Verify the candidate’s name


First things first: when
contacting a reference, be sure
you verify the candidate’s name.
2. Confirm how they know the
candidate
Depending on your requirements,
candidates might provide a list of
different types of references. For
example, your business might require that
the candidate gives at least two personal
references in addition to two professional
references.
3. Ask what makes the candidate
a good fit
Use your time with the candidate’s
reference to gauge whether or not
the candidate will be a good fit for
the position.
4. Have the reference rank the
candidate
You should have a variety of reference
check questions prepared when you
contact a candidate’s reference. Some of
these might include open-ended
questions, short-answer questions, and
multiple choice questions that use a scale
ranking from 1-10.
5. Find out the candidate’s strengths
and weaknesses.
One main goal of your employment
reference check should be to find out the
candidate’s strengths and weaknesses.
Along with your other sets of questions,
be sure to specifically ask the reference
to list the candidate’s strengths and
weaknesses.
6. Ask about the candidate’s
behavior
Knowing a candidate’s behaviors
and attitudes can help you predict
how they will act in your work
environment. If you’re contacting
an old employer, be sure you dig
into the candidate’s behavior.
Application Form
• An application form is an official
document that a potential employer will
require candidates to complete when
applying for a vacancy.
• Application forms are also used where
there is a continuous need for recruitment
or where a high volume of applicants is
expected.
Weighted Application Form
• A weighted application form is a form in
which numeric values are assigned to the
information fields.
• Data is collected for each information
field. The applications are ranked
accordingly and help the employer to
predict the performance of the potential
applicant within the organisation.
Biographical Data
Biographical Data consists of
information regarding an
individual’s past. It includes
information about an individual’s
personality, attitudes, experiences,
and skills.
