EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Kalai Enterprise is a micro enterprise sole proprietorship founded in 2018 that manufactures sustainable
areca leaf plates and bowls. Located in Tamil Nadu, India, it is currently in a growth stage producing
1,200 plates per day.
The areca leaf plate and bowl market is estimated to grow from $414 million in 2022 to $658 million by
2031, a CAGR of 5.4%. Sales are highly seasonal around Indian festivals and dependent on areca leaf
availability, typically harvested in summer months. Export regulations require various certifications
related to health, safety, pesticides, and heavy metals. Domestically, only Udyog Aadhaar MSME
registration is required.
Kalai Enterprise strategically partners with agents to export products to countries like the USA and
Australia. Its proprietor Jay Chandran manages sales, which are currently focused on supplying 25 local
shops. Production is done manually by female workers using two pressing machines with dye molds. Raw
materials are cleaned in a large tank before production. Expanding production capacity is planned by
adding another machine.
While areca leaf offers a biodegradable alternative to plastics, some sustainability concerns exist around
potential deforestation and water use if demand rises substantially. However, certifications help ensure
ethical sourcing and production. Overall, with responsible practices, areca leaf products can offer
sustainable benefits over plastic. Kalai Enterprise is positioned to capitalize on growing global demand
if it can continue managing its seasonal raw material supply and production capacity.

• Company Name: Kalai Enterprise
• Mission statement/objectives: To empower individuals to make
Seasonal Factors: The sales are highly dependent on seasonal factors. The high sales are recorded during the festival months of India
since most of these plates are used in occasions in temples and regional places. The availability of leaves also possesses the problem since
the areca leaves are harvested mostly in summer months.
Regulation/ Certifications: There is no stringent regulation for the sale of Areca plates in the Domestic area. It is necessary that it should
be registered in the MSME, India. When the entrepreneur is going for export, he has to get the following certifications:
Health and Safety Test: To check for the count of the Microbes
Aerobic Plate Count: To access the count of bacteria on the surface of the plates.
Phyto- Sanitation Test: For preventing the import of any new pest from source country.
Heavy metal test: It checks the amount of iron, lead, copper and zinc in bio-degradable products
Composability Test: To check the number of addictive, plastics, glue in the product.
Pesticide test: To check the traces of fertilizers and pesticides in the plates. 6

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND
SUSTAINABILITY:
Company Policy: The company is engaging in producing the sustainable plates with areca leaves. There is
no specific policy mentioned by this company.
Social Responsibility certifications: Certifications for the production of sustainable paper cups, saucers,
plates, hoops and other similar products.
Sustainability: Areca leaf plates offer a tempting alternative to plastic: they decompose in weeks (unlike
plastic's centuries!), require less water than bamboo, and use no chemicals. But concerns loom. 223 million
Indians chew areca leaves, raising deforestation fears if demand for plates surges. Water scarcity is another
worry, as areca palms drink more than some alternatives. Luckily, certifications like Fairtrade address ethical
sourcing concerns. Choose wisely, compost correctly, and these plates could be a sustainable win!
