SI OPERATIONAL REPORT
LEATHER INCUBATOR

JULY - SEPTEMBER 2022

OVERVIEW OF THE SECTOR

• Current Status of the sector

The manufacturing sector in the country is still at its early stage of development. Most of the products consumed locally are
imported and very few are produced locally. The Country imports goods amounting to P61.9B per year and that’s opportunity cost
for the country in terms of employment creation and skills development. The sector contributes about 5.41% to the GDP which is
very low. The sector has the potential to be the largest employer if advantage is taken to produce part of the products locally
especially in the textile sector.
Clients incubated at Gaborone Leather incubator are start ups and operating at very low capacity and have invested around 350k
which is very little when taking into account the demand of the sector. Skill is lacking when it comes to innovation and creating
products that are unique to our needs, clients tend to produce substitutes which in turn becomes difficult to penetrate or replace the
available products in the market.

• General Challenges
-Availability of raw materials -Small market size -Competition with foreign owned companies
- Restrictive or entry barriers into main stream retailers -Law of skilled manpower -Access to finance
- High rental cost and lack of operational spaces.
Impact of COVID on the sector
-Price hikes -Delays in delivery of order goods -Loss of key personnel -Emotional distress on the personal -Created uncertainty
and unpredictability – Loss of revenue due to lockdowns.
• Opportunities in the sector
-Investing in fast consumable manufacturing – Government posed restriction on importation of certain products -
