What is Academic Extension,
Community Resources and
Community Development?
Academic Extension

The Academic Extension Program is a school-based enrichment

program which offers academically oriented students a range of
learning experiences to meet their specific talents. If we are providing
an environment that helps each child develop his intellectual potential,
then our curriculum and programming must evidence excellence for
children of all abilities. We cannot help children grow to their fullest
potential unless we offer them learning opportunities that are
commensurate with, and stretch, their abilities. This applies to the
average student and to the high ability or gifted student.
Community Resources are assets in a community that help meet certain needs for
those around them. These assets can be people, places or structures, and community
services. These resources can be essential in developing skills post-discharge by
helping the client diversify their range of outlets of support, expression and natural
self-development.
Community development is a process where community members are supported by agencies to
identify and take collective action on issues which are important to them. Community development
empowers community members and creates stronger and more connected communities. Community
development is a holistic approach grounded in principles of empowerment, human rights, inclusion, social
justice, self-determination and collective action (Kenny, 2007). Community development considers
community members to be experts in their lives and communities, and values community knowledge and
wisdom. Community development programs are led by community members at every stage - from deciding
on issues to selecting and implementing actions, and evaluation. Community development has an explicit
focus on the redistribution of power to address the causes of inequality and disadvantage.
What are the Dimensions,
Frameworks and Models of
Extensions?
The department of education gives importance of community
partnership and linkages in the attainment of its vision and mission
leading to the attainment of quality life? Community is a part of the
society and education is the counterpart of both. School is the social
institute where consciously designed learning experiences are
provided with the objectives of achieving social aim at large, over a
period of time. When the community, schools, and families work
together, they can provide the best possible resources and expertise to
enhance the education of all children. Therefore, it is a collective
responsibility of many groups to educate children.
ways to build and ensure that a
great relationships are the foundation
upon which you build outstanding
performance:
1. Build a Culture of Listening: There is a lot written about being an active
listener, and it’s one of the pillars of building rapport with individuals. This
includes giving the person in front of you your full attention, minimizing
distractions, reflecting back emotions, and checking your understanding by
asking questions.
2. Learn to Recognize Emotion in others: Respectfully recognizing another’s
emotional state will allow a leader to demonstrate empathy, and alter the way
s/he communicates in order to be heard.

3. Use Praise: Praise can be a great motivator when it is authentic, since it

fosters positive emotions and can boost performance.

4. Be a Leader: Teams want leading, not another ‘buddy’ who indulges in

office gossip. A leader’s role isn’t to be everyone’s best friend, but to behave
in a leaderly fashion that inspires trust and confidence. A leader provides a
vision and objectivity, standing outside the melting-pot of the day-to-day
frustrations and minutiae.
5. Set High Expectations: This is certainly important in terms of outcomes, but
also in terms of behavior and culture. One way to make sure everyone knows
what is expected of them, is simply to tell them. Don’t be afraid of
articulating your expectations – and ensure you demonstrate these daily.

6. Ask Questions: This way of communicating has several benefits. It signals

interest in your team, both personally and professionally. Adopting a
questioning, coaching style as a leader will also allow others to be more
solutions-focused, which in turn empowers individuals.

7. Develop Shared Values. Values are the often unspoken rules by which we
act; they govern our behaviour.
As a teacher and a person, building great
relationships with others is crucial if you want to get
good results fast. So taking time at the outset to
create a trusting and humane bond, that nevertheless
expects and values good performance, helps you
immeasurably along the way. These seven ways to
foster rapport and communication with others will
build a solid foundation.
Community Resources/Relationship in
teaching/learning process
As teachers, our primary goal for our students is to promote
learning, inspire them to bring out their best and help them become
productive members of the community. Stakeholders are individuals
or groups who have an interest or concern for the school. They
include parents, school administrators, board members, local
government officials, alumni and socio-civic groups who contribute to
the development of the school community. Thus, a healthy
relationship between the teachers and stakeholders is important, as
this will enable everybody to harmoniously work together, which will
have a positive impact on the students learning process.
The need for an active and effective school-community relations
program is evidenced by our rapid population growth, modern trends in
curriculum, the need for more financial support, and the increasing need of
education in our society.

The teacher is a key person in building an effective school-community

relations program. Further, the program is misused if its intended goals are not
for the benefit of the pupils and community the school serves.

The school-community relations program should be a cooperative and

continuous program constantly evaluated by the community and the school.
School-community relations should be a two-way communication--from school to
community and from community to school.

The school-community relations program is not a cure-all for all school

problems, but it is one effective means of striving for a more adequate
educational program.
