REFLECTION ON HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF VALUES EDUCATION IN PHILIPPINE

EDUCATION AND K-12 ESP FRAMEWORK
(by: Dr. Amalia S. Labi-I, Education Program Supervisor, ESP SDOIN)

If we try to look back to our younger years and compare the youths of yesterday and
today, then perhaps many would claim that the former is much better than the later when it
comes to moral values. Looking at our education curriculum, it started as values education until
it evolved into ESP(Edukasyon Sa Pagpapahalaga). Two years ago, it was changed to ESP (Edukasyon Sa
Pagpapakatao) in line with the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum. But still, teaching values was the
focus. But sad to note, many did not see its real essence because some students and teachers
just took it for granted, thinking that it was nothing but an additional burden.
But wait, we need to reconsider and take ESP seriously because if we’ll still ignore it up
to this time, then the basic principle in life which is to know the sense of Justice and the
fulfilment of human dignity could never be achieved.
ESP is begging to everyone, especially to teachers and students, to understand
and practice this basic principle so that we will always do the right thing. And with this, moral
issues on illegal drugs, rape cases, prostitution, brutal killings, human trafficking, abortions,
physical violence, graft and corruptions, terrorism to name a few, could be minimized if not
totally eliminated.
Values Education is one of the most important things that should be taught in schools.
As Filipinos we are all known for our good characteristics. When we were still small, we are
taught by our parents to give respect to elders, love our brothers, sisters and family, have faith
in God and always be kind to others. However, in our generation today these traits are slowly
fading. That's why it is important to practice values in schools among students. The educational
institute of the country plays a big contribution in promoting values education for students to
construct a good character. By promoting values education in schools, we can create a better
country for the future generations through lessening the negative attributes by teaching values.
Teachers should remember that young children also tend to copy or mimic what they
see in their elders and in persons of authority. Thus, it is important for educators, school officials
and other personnel to practice what is being preached inside classrooms and by showing good
manners always. A teacher who gives lessons on good behavior would not be credible and
would set a bad example if he or she were ill-mannered outside the classroom. This also applies
to school authorities. They would not be good role models if they display improper or criminal
behavior in public. All school personnel should be aware that good manners should not only be
taught by whoever was assigned to teach GMRC. All teachers and all school staff are mentors
when it comes to this aspect. The GMRC seeds sown in kindergarten and elementary will grow
and bloom if these lessons continue until high school. With values education, students will learn
the virtues of patience, perseverance, industry, honesty, and integrity, among others. They will
also learn how to respect the laws, their elders and other people. Lessons on nationalism will
teach them to love and help their motherland. Lessons on peace and justice, diversity, gender
equity and love of nature are also important if we were to have intelligent, smart, law abiding
and well-mannered citizens.

PLEDGE OF COMMITMENT

I, BEVERLY ROSE B. DELOS SANTOS hereby state that I commit to work hard despite all
the hardships we are facing during this pandemic. I assure that I shall work for the welfare of the
school, teachers and especially our students. I see that problems are the stepping stones of
success. We cannot live a problem free life. So, problems and challenges are the opportunities
to improve our skills. I also commit that I shall never give up the responsibilities that were
assigned to me. I will keep up the motivated spirit in me and always work on a positive note.

I assure that at any cost I shall not do any activities that degrade the values of the school. One
should keep up the ethical values like Honesty, Non-partisanship, Determination, Self-
confidence to produce a good work. I promise that I shall not deplete the good will of the school
for my personal benefits. One's character is reflected in his work. I commit to be truthful despite
being in a tough situation.

This too shall pass, I know. So, by then, everything will be worth.

REFLECTION ON HIERARCHY OF VALUES

(by: Mr. James Cesar Metiam, Instructor, MMSU CTE)

The Hierarchy of values is a range of higher and lower values in which the moral and
ideological order of life is established.
The order of these values is highly debated and difficult to determine, because to reach
a conclusion the process is subjective because it will depend on personal, group, educational,
cultural and social perspectives.
The hierarchy of values requires that the human being has a very clear and filtered
system of their values, since to them is the personal and social direction. But it does not mean
that values are immutable and cannot change. Values can change, for example in the early
stages of life the value that could be more important in a person could change later; Can also
change according to social, labor, cultural and religious.
The values have a personal character, each one gives the degree of importance that wishes to
this or that value according to their social point of view in the value system.
The importance of the hierarchy of values are convictions that determine, guide and
guide a person's behavior, aspirations, interests and behavior in society. Values are the
foundations of social life, which allow the coexistence of people. Its hierarchy helps to set
priorities. The most important values are those that are part of the identity, they indicate the way
we express ourselves and live. The clearer the values and their hierarchy, the orientation and
the very meaning of life are determined according to purpose and perspectives.
Teaching the importance of the hierarchy of values at school, home and in social groups
from an early age can contribute to a better view of the composition and function ability of
values in humanity. Commercial distractions, products, new communication standards and
interpersonal relationships have relegated the inculcation of values at all levels, both family and
social, academic and work. The order of degree of values has been displaced in many cases in
line with the changes that modernity is undergoing. Globalization can be one of the main
reasons that the cultural values of society are disappearing and creating new 'values'.
