DESIGNING A

TABLE FOR 5 YR
OLD
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
Design a table for a 5 year old
PROBLEM DEFINITION
 Clarity on the problem is required for proceeding with the
design of the Table and to minimize “design gaps”. This
can be achieved by questioning the customers who require
the above mentionechTable
 A survey can be taken in the form of a questionnaire as to
define the problem with more clarity. The questionnaire
can be given to multiple customers;
FUNCTIONS AND MEANS
 Table for 5 year old made with light weight materials
 Comfortable Table by means of cushioning materials
 Variable height by means of pneumatic mechanism
 Cup holder made with plastic
 Durable and stable Table by means of proper design dimensions and materials
DESIGN ATTRIBUTES
 OBJECTIVES
 Comfortable
 Cheap
 Stable
 Adjustable
 Durable
 CONSTRAINTS
 Light weight
 Easily movable
 Durable
DATA COLLECTION
 Extra surveys or interviews may be carried out to have more clarity on the design attributes
and customer requirements.
 Specifications for designing every aspect and performance of the Table need to

be prepared.
BRAINSTORMING AND
IDEATION
 Discussions are carried out among the designers, engineers and researchers to incorporate new
ideas or additional features to the design (by meeting the constraints).
STANDARDIZATION
 Standard parts which are readily available in market are listed and its compatibility with our
design is checked.
 Standard parts may include nuts and bolts, bearings, steel rods, springs etc.
PROTOTYPING
 Full-scale prototypes are made of the Table to test under various environments.
 Simulation models can be also be developed to test its strength and durability in computer
analysis softwares.
TESTING
 Testing can be done using computer softwares to study the various performing parameters.
 Testing can also be performed in laboratories by using testing machines to

study parameters like strength, movement of parts, corrosion resistance, etc.

MODIFICATION
 If the results are not satisfactory, the design is modified and performance is brought to the
acceptable level. For example, height of table according to the height of child
 This can be re-designed accordingly to adjust with height of child
FREEZING FINAL DESIGN
 After re-designing and obtaining satisfactory results after testing the final design is fixed. After
manufacturing and assembly, the Table is available in market at optimum selling price. Online
marketing can also be adopted.
