WIND AND HYDRO ENERGY

UNDERSTANDING WIND ENERGY

What is wind energy?

Wind energy is electrical energy
generator by harnessing the kinetic
energy of the natural flowing air in
the Earth's atmosphere. Wind turbine
is used to obtain wind energy.

Technology and Innovation

Advancements in wind turbine
technology and design have
significantly increased energy
capture efficiency.

HARNESSING WIND POWER
How wind turbine works?
The kinetic energy of moving air particles in the wind is
transferred to the turbine blades and makes them turn.
The kinetic energy of the turbine blade is transferred to a
magnet surrounded by a coil of wire in the generator. As
the magnet spins, its energy is transferred to the coil of
wire in the form of electricity.

Location of the turbine

Wind turbines are located at the
rounded top of the hills that rise
steadily and sink steadily because
the wind move smoothly over the
hilltop and keeps the turbine
spinning steadily.

EXPLORING HYDRO ENERGY
What is hydroelectric energy?
Hydroelectric energy is generated by harnessing the
kinetic energy of flowing or falling water using a dam

Reservoir and Dam Systems

A reservoir is needed to produce water. A dam is
needed to control the flow of water and to create a
difference between the water level of intake and
discharge.
Hydropower Generation
The water level of intake is higher than that of discharge
so the water from the higher reservoir flows through
pipes of the dam and turns the turbine located at the end
of the pipes. This movement is passed to a generator and
electricity is produced . Photos provided by Pexels
UNDERSTANDING TIDAL ENERGY AND TIDES
• Tidal energy-it is the electrical energy
that is generated by harnessing the
movement of tides.
• Tides - the rise and fall of the ocean caused by
moon’s gravity
• High tide - it is when the sea reaches the
highest level and comes furthest up the beach
when it rises
• low tide - it is when the sea reaches lowest level
and is away from the beach when it falls

• Tidal range- difference between the highest

level and lowest level of the ocean

HARNESSING TIDAL ENERGY
How it is harnessed?
It is harnessed using tidal barrages which are dams
built across the estuary.

How do tidal barrages work?

During the high tide, the water of the ocean is
collected behind the dam and the water level of the
ocean becomes higher than that of the basin so the
gates are opened and water is allowed to pass through
tunnel and makes the turbines turn. This movement is
passed to generator and electricity is produced. When
low tide occurs, the water passes through the tunnel
in opposite direction and more electricity is produced.
