Types of
microorganisms –
causing diseases
a. What are microorganisms?

- Microbes or microorganisms are unicellular

organisms that can not be seen by naked eyes.

-They live in water, soil, and in the air, in our

bodies.

- Some microbes are useful in our day

to day life while others are harmful to
our health.
B.TYPES OF MICROBES
VIRUSES

- The smallest.
- Can only live inside
the cells of other
living organisms
- Causing influenza,
chicken pox, small
pox and AIDS.
B.TYPES OF MICROBES
BACTERIA
- Single celled
organisms.
- Live in body tissues
between the cells.
- Causing whooping
cough, tuberculosis,

B.TYPES OF MICROBES
PROTOZOA
- Single celled
organisms.
- Larger than viruses
and bacteria.
- Causing malaria
and amoebic
dysentery.
B.TYPES OF MICROBES
FUNGI
- The largest one.
- Mushrooms, molds,
yeasts.
- Causing athlete’s
foot, ringworm and
thrush.

CAUSE DISEASEs?

- Microorganisms can cause disease in various ways:

A . I N W H I C H WAY D O M I C R O O R G A N I S M S

CAUSE DISEASEs?
Actual contact Containminated
with an infected food and water
person. Droplets in the air,
coughs and sneezes.

THE CONTROL OF MICROORGANISMS

ANTIBIOTICS
– POWERFUL
MEDICATION
A. WHAT ARE ANTIBIOTICS?
- Powerful medications that treat certain infections and can save lives when used
properly.
- Two types of function:
+ A bactericidal antibiotic  kills the bacteria.
Example: penicillin
+ A bacteriostatic antibiotic  stops bacteria from multiplying.
A. WHAT ARE ANTIBIOTICS?
IMPORTANT: Antibiotics have no effect on viruses..
b. W h y c a n t he y be a peril ?

Overuse leads to antibiotic-

resistant bacteria.
b. W h y c a n t he y be a peril ?

Disrupting beneficial bacteria in

our bodies, causing issues like
diarrhea or C. difficile infections
b. W h y c a n t he y be a peril ?

Allergic reactions to antibiotics

can threat your life
