WILL, BE GOING TO,

PRESENT CONTINUOUS
AND
PRESENT SIMPLE
WITH THE IDEA
OF FUTURE
1. FUTURE WILL.
We use the Future Simple Tense with 'will' to
express:
• A decision we make while we are speaking.
 The phone is ringing. You decide to answer the
phone.
 I'll answer the phone.
 Is it midnight already? I think I'll go to bed now.
 Oh, and I'll also take a kilo of oranges please.
 (After looking out the window) It's nice outside. I
won't drive today. I'll walk or ride my bike.
• We express a promise.

 I promise I will not tell him about the surprise party.

 Don't worry, I'll be careful.

 I won't tell anyone your secret.

 I’ll help you with your homework tomorrow.

• We make a prediction.
 The year 2222 will be a very interesting year.

 John Smith will be the next President.

 I think it will rain tomorrow. / It'll rain tomorrow. (an opinion )

 I'm sure her class will finish late again.

For future facts
We can use "will" to describe future facts.
Examples:

 Tomorrow, the sun will rise at 8:30 and will set at 5 PM.
 The president will serve a four-year term.
 Who will host the next World Cup?
 Next year, we will offer evening classes.
 The police will not release additional information.
2. BE GOING TO.
•FOR INTENTIONS
•We use going to when we have the intention to do
something before we speak. We have already made a
decision before speaking.
 Examples:
 Jorge won the lottery. He says he's going to buy a Porsche.
 We're going to paint our bedroom tomorrow.
 When are you going to go on holiday?
 In these examples, we had an intention or plan before speaking.
The decision was made before speaking.
FOR PREDICTIONS
We often use going to to make a prediction about the future. Our
prediction is based on present evidence. We are saying what we think will
happen. Here are some examples:

Examples:

 The sky is very black. It's going to snow.

 It's 8.30! You're going to miss your train!

 I crashed the company car. My boss isn't going to be very happy!

 In these examples, the present situation (black sky, the time, damaged

car) gives us a good idea of what is going to happen.

3. PRESENT CONTINUOUS.
Sometimes, speakers use the Present Continuous to
indicate that something will or will not happen in the near
future. We use it for future arrangements.

Examples:
 I am meeting some friends after work.
 I am not going to the party tonight.
 I'm meeting Jim at the airport.
 I am leaving tomorrow.
 We're having a staff meeting next Monday.
4. PRESENT SIMPLE
We use present simple with Scheduled Events
in the Near Future.

Examples:
 The train leaves tonight at 6 PM.
 The bus does not arrive at 1 AM, it arrives at 1PM.
 When do we board the plane?
 This class finishes at 9.00p.m.
 My final exam is tomorow at 3.00 p.m.
