IDIOMA I (INGLÉS)

UNIT 1. THE FUTURE: PRESENT SIMPLE, PRESENT CONTINUOUS, GOING

TO, FUTURE SIMPLE, FUTURE CONTINUOUS, FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE,
AND FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS. EXERCISES

PRESENT SIMPLE

We use the present simple when we talk about timetables, programmes, etc. (for
example, for public transport, cinemas, etc.)

The train leaves Plymouth at 11:30 and arrives in London at 14.45.

You can use the present simple for people if their plans are fixed like a timetable.

I start my new job on Monday.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

We use the present continuous to talk about arrangements that we have made for the
future.

What are you doing on Saturday evening? I’m going to the theatre.
What time are you meeting Ann this evening? At 10:30. I‟m meeting her
at the station.

Going to is also possible in these sentences, but the present continuous is more natural
for arrangements.

GOING TO

It is used:

- to talk about a personal plan or intention. I have already decided to do it. I intend
to do it, but perhaps not arranged to do it.

The windows are dirty. Yes, I know. I’m going to clean them later.
(I have decided to clean them but I haven‟t arranged to clean them)
UNIT 1. THE FUTURE: PRESENT SIMPLE, PRESENT CONTINUOUS, GOING TO, FUTURE SIMPLE, FUTURE CONTINUOUS, 1
FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE, AND FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS
- to make predictions about the future based on what is happening now.

Most people can see that the Internet is going to be just as much a part
of the future for us all as the telephone or electricity is today.

- to make a prediction about the future, when there is evidence that something will
happen in the near future.

A man can‟t see where he‟ walking. There is a hole in front of him.
He is going to fall into the hole.

Look at the clouds! It’s going to rain.

FUTURE SIMPLE

We use future simple when we decide to do something at the time of speaking.

What would you like to drink? I’ll have an orange juice, please.
Did you phone Ruth? Oh no, I forgot. I’ll phone her now.

We often use will:

 to make an offer.
That bag looks heavy. I’ll help you with it.
 to make a promise, warning or threat.
Thanks for lending me the money. I’ll pay you back on Friday. (promise)
Careful! You‟ll fall. (warning)
I‟ll deal with you later! (threat)
 to ask somebody to do something:
Will you please be quiet?
 to talk about future events that are dependent on other events.
If we leave now, we’ll be home before nightfall.

We often use will with:

 Probably, definitely, possibly to show how certain or uncertain we are: I’ll
probably be home late this evening.
 I expect: I haven‟t seen Carol today. I expect she’ll phone this evening.

UNIT 1. THE FUTURE: PRESENT SIMPLE, PRESENT CONTINUOUS, GOING TO, FUTURE SIMPLE, FUTURE CONTINUOUS, 2
FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE, AND FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS
 (I’m) sure: Don‟t worry about the exam. I’m sure you’ll pass.
 (I) think: Do you think Sarah will like the present we bought her?
 (I) don’t think: I don’t think the exam will be very difficult.
 I wonder: I wonder what will happen.

Note: After (I) hope, we generally use the present:

I hope Carol phones this evening.

I hope it doesn‟t rain tomorrow.

FUTURE CONTINUOUS

We use the future continuous:

- to talk about an action that will be in progress at a specific point in the future.
This time next week I’ll be flying to Mexico.
- to talk about events that have already been arranged for a future date. It is
similar to the present continuous for arrangements.
The Rolling Stones will be performing in Moscow in June.
- to ask polite and less direct questions about somebody‟s plan. Very formal
request.
Will you be waiting anything else, sir?

FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE

We use the future perfect simple to talk about a completed action or event in the future.
What time will you be home? I’ll have finished here by half past eight, so I
should be home about nine.

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS

We use the future perfect continuous to say how long an action or event will have been
in progress at a specific point in the future.
