COGNITIVE
DEVELOPMEN
T THEORY
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
- means the development of the ability to think and
reason.
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT THEORY
- proposes that gender, like other
concepts, cannot be learned until a
child reaches a particular stage of
intellectual development. (Kohlberg &
Ullian,1974)
Gender Constancy
- an understanding that a person's gender is fixed
and cannot be altered by a change, like hairstyle,
dress, or name.
Lawrence Kohlberg
- according to him, sometimes an individual makes errors in classifying the
self or others and thinks that arbitrary changes in classification can occur
even a child may have learned that people can be categorized as either male
or female.
THREE STAGES OF GENDER- IDENTITY FORMATION THREE STAGES
OF GENDER-
1. An awareness that two sexes exist (attained IDENTITY
around age of 3). FORMATION
2. An understanding that gender does not change
over time (stability). (Slaby and
3. An awareness that gender remains unchanged
Frey)
across situations and behaviors (constancy).
Jean Piaget's
Theory
- cognitive development of
children occurs in stages
and they do not have an
understanding of physical
constancy before reaching
ages 4 to 7.
Cognitive Development Approach(Visual)
- once the child categorized him/herself as female or male, he/she will use the self
categorization as an organizing focus for attaching value to behaviors.
A. Gender appropriate behaviors
B. Gender inappropriate behaviors
Cognitive developmental theory - portrays the child as actively
searching for cues as how to behave competently and correctly,
rather than as being passively shaped by environmental forces.
Martin and Halverson (1983)
- have shown that the age at which gender constancy is
demonstrated depends on the type of test used; children
responding to a real, as opposed to pretend, situation
shows signs of gender constancy as young as age 3.
Two Different Aspects of the Social Learning Theory
and Cognitive Developmental Theory
1.Early Sex- typing may stem from differential reinforcement
and observational learning (SLT).
2. Sex-typing occurs after the child has achieved gender
constancy may be due to deliberate same sex modeling (CDT).
Types of Cognitive Development Theories
• Sensorimotor intelligence knowledge - this is obtained from sensory perception and
motor actions involving objects in the environment.
• Preoperational Stage - during this stage (toddler through age 7), young children are able
to think about things symbolically.
• Concrete operational thinking - children typically reach this stage, which is characterized
by logical reasoning about real situations without being influenced by changes in
appearances, at the age of seven or eight.
• Formal operational stage - stage of human cognitive development, typically beginning
around age 11 or 12, characterized by the emergence of logical thinking processes.
