Acids And Metal
Carbonates
Objectives
1 Describe the safety precautions necessary
for the reaction of an acid with a metal
carbonate
2 Know how to test for the gas released
from the reaction of an acid with a metal
carbonate
3 Predict the products of dil. Hydrochloric,
Nitric and Sulfuric Acids with various
metal carbonates
Predict the products of reactions between dil. Hydrochloric, Nitric and Sulfuric Acids;
and metals, metal oxides and metal carbonates. (Except Nitric Acid and Metals)

Task 1 (Starter)
Use the table on your worksheet to fill
in the hazards and precautions you
should take when carrying out the
reaction between an acid and a metal
carbonate

Predict the products of reactions between dil. Hydrochloric, Nitric and Sulfuric Acids;
and metals, metal oxides and metal carbonates. (Except Nitric Acid and Metals)
Set-up And Method
Diagram Method
1 Collect the apparatus in the
Glass diagram.
Tubing 2 Fill one boiling tube a third full,
with limewater.
3 Measure 10cm3 of Hydrochloric
Acid using a measuring
cylinder and a pipette.
4 Add the acid to the other boiling
tube.
5 Quickly place half an
Hydrochloric ‘indigestion tablet’ into the acid
Acid and fix on the bung.
6 Bubble the gas produced through
Indigestion Limewater the limewater, as in the
Tablet diagram.
7 Record any observations.

Outcomes
1 All can describe the safety precautions
necessary for the reaction of an acid with
a metal carbonate
2 Most will know how to test for the gas
released from the reaction of an acid with
a metal carbonate
3 Some can predict the products of dil.
