Introduction
Land pollution is a serious problem that impacts humans,
animals, and the earth. It can be caused by various factors, such
as industrial waste, agricultural chemicals, mining activities,
deforestation, urbanization, etc. Some businesses are taking
steps to prevent and reduce land pollution, such as adopting
soil environmental policies, implementing green practices, and
valuing every resource. These actions can benefit firms by
improving their reputation, performance, and resilience and for
sustainability in a business.

Effects of Land
Pollution on
Humans
The impact of land pollution is not limited just to the earth and
animals. Humans can also experience negative consequences that
can influence quality of life and health. Some of the potential
consequences include birth defects, the development of breathing
disorders, skin diseases, and cancer. Most of these develop after
exposure to waste from water poisoning and soil contamination.
Land pollution has also been linked to developmental deficits in
children. Chemicals that are commonly found in contaminated soil
and water, such as lead, have can impact a child’s cognitive
development even if the exposure is very low.

Business Sustainability-refers to company’s strategy to reduce
negative environmental impact from their operations in a particular market.

Extensive land use and conversion are threatening the

health of our planet, with 75% of the land surface already
sifnificantly altered. There was a CEO briefing in
“Leading a Sustainable Land Use Transition” argues
firms should ensure land is managed well to improve
resilience and sustainability.

According to CEO- Svein Tore Holsether, President and

Chief Executive Officer, Yara International
“If you’re going to grow enough food for a growing
population and take care of the land it grows on, we have
to look at the full value chain. We are setting up
partnerships with food chain players to design role
models for the future. This is the future of farming.”
Three reason why land is a key component of a corporate sustainability
strategy and sets out reccomendations for businesses to lead the transition
towards sustainable land use:

1. To achieve 2. Sustainable 3. Sustainable

Case Study in Regenerative Farming
Practices
Yara International and a global dairy company have joined forces to
revamp farming practices, focusing on optimizing land use and nutrient
supply while cutting emissions. They're collaborating closely with dairy
farmers, introducing regenerative agriculture methods. Their initial work
in the EU has seen an 11% increase in green yield, a 2.7% drop in
greenhouse gas emissions, and a 17% boost in milk production within
just eight months. This aligns with Ibrahim Thiaw's view that addressing
land management is critical for food security, climate goals, and
biodiversity preservation. He emphasizes the need to tackle climate,
biodiversity, and land issues simultaneously for effective solutions.
According to Ibrahim Thiaw (Under-Secretary General and
Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to
Combat Desertification ) “ Without large-scale and concerted
efforts to protect, sustainability manage, and restore our land
resources, it will not be possible to ensure food and water
security, achieve climate targets, and halt biodiversity loss. We
cannot stop the climate crisis today, biodiversity loss
tomorrow, and land degradation the day after, we need to
tackle them in tandem.”
A study in China if “Does Soil Pollution Prevention and Control Promote Corporate
Sustainable Development?” A Quasi-Natural Experiment examined the impact of the
"10-Point Soil Plan," a strategy for soil pollution prevention and control, on corporate
sustainability among listed firms from 2013 to 2020. Using the Difference-in-
Differences method, it found that the plan notably enhanced sustainability through
debt reduction and cash defense effects but fell short in driving innovation. State-
owned and large enterprises benefited more, influenced by local environmental
regulations' strength. The findings suggest insights for governments and businesses to
actively implement soil pollution control, aligning soil environmental planning with
water and air strategies for a comprehensive pollution prevention system.
Conclusion/
Reccomendation
Land pollution is a serious problem that impacts humans,
animals, and the earth. Business sustainability is the practice of
managing the environmental, social, and economic impacts of a
business in a way that ensures its long-term viability and value
creation. One of the aspects of business sustainability is to
No
prevent or reduce land pollution by adopting cleaner production
methods, complying with environmental regulations,
plastic
implementing soil conservation measures, and engaging in bag
corporate social responsibility. Moreover, the negative
consequences of land pollution can be greatly reduced with the
cooperation of everyone. By making a conscious effort to
contribute to a safer environment, the health and well-being of all
can be protected. Sustainability for business is about balance. It’s
not about maximizing profits but also minimizing negative
effects on the environment and society. In doing so,businesses can
create long-term value for their stakeholders while reducing their
impact on the planet.
