What Is
Morphology?

• Morphology is a part of linguistics that studies the structure of words, word

formation and word variation.
• Two study areas :
Inflectional morphology >>> how words take on different forms.
Morphological derivation >>> how words are recognized in a language, and new
words created by pre-existing words.

What is involved in morphology?

A. Word Structure: The Lexeme

Lexeme or called word-form is a unit of morphology analysis in
linguistics that roughly corresponds to a set of forms taken by a single
root word, that occur in speech and writing. E.g.
• Sing, Sings, Sung, or even Singing belong to the lexeme SING
• Plays, played, and playing belong to the lexeme PLAY
The word can be viewed as a lexeme related with morpho-syntactic
which examine word into grammatical form, e.g. sing [verb, present,
3rd person, singular].

What is involved in morphology?

B. Morphemes
• The term morpheme is used to refer to the smallest, indivisible units of semantic
content or grammatical function which words are made up of.
• The fierce, desk, eat, boot, at, fee, mosquito, etc., are morphologically simple
because tthose cannot be divided up into smaller units which each unit has its own
meaning. The -quito part of mosquito or the -erce part of fierce don't have its own
meaning in each separated part.
• Words desks (desk-s) and boots (boot-s) are morphologically complex because
those words can be broken down into smaller units that every unit has it own
meaning.

Why do languages have morphology?

• Morphology is one of linguistic subjects that focuses on understanding language

structure. Specifically how words are formed and interconnected.
• Morphology plays a key role in unraveling the mechanisms of how word had been
created and connected
• Morphemic analysis (one of the morphological focuses) contributes to enhancing
language skills, including vocabulary development, language acquisition, and language
processing.
• Morphology plays a pivotal role in creating and varying words. It serves as a tool for
linguistic creativity, allowing for the formation of new words within a language.

Why Morphology Is
iInportant ?
It helps us to understand how words are being created and how
1
they are connected to each other.

It helps us to understand word formation, the changed meaning of the

2
word, and the relationship between the words.

Learning Morphology can improve vocabulary, language

acquitition, language change, and other language skills.
