Introduction
The unique feature of our civilization, which makes it different from all others,
is the wide use of mechanical power. Earlier, animals had been trained to help
us for various purposes such as for travelling and for agriculture usage. After
this, a revolution in wind power came into play. For example, ships used wind
power to travel. After some time, the use of power from running streams
started. When we learned to convert the heat of chemical reactions into
mechanical energy, it revolutionized the world. Machines which were used for
this purpose are known as heat engines and the whole system of these machines
is called prime movers.
Prime Mover

Prime mover, is a technical term of art in science and

engineering meaning any machine that converts energy from
a source energy, into 'mechanical' energy, usually, as a motive
power source providing traction to move a vehicle.
The first prime mover

The first prime mover that had a revolutionary effect was the gun. They work
under the principle of a heat engine. It was hard to recognize that the very
important difference between the bow and the gun was the substitution of
gunpowder for the bowman’s muscles. This made a revolution because the
musket was originally inferior to the bow in range and accuracy, but, through
persistence, the range and accuracy of musket became more advanced. The
effectiveness of this prime mover is still being increased.
Mechanism

Prime movers are often called “driving equip-ment” because they are the
primary source ofmechanical energy or power. The mechanical
energyproduced by the prime mover is transmitted to anothermachine or
mechanism, such as a pump or aircompressor, to do some form of useful
work. Themechanism, or linkage, that transmits the mechanicalpower
developed by the prime mover is called thedrive.Electric motors and internal
combustion enginesare commonly used as prime movers. For this reason, this
chapter briefly covers electric prime movers,gasoline-operated prime movers,
and diesel-operated prime mover.
Types of prime mover

There are wide variety of different types of prime movers. Each designed to use
a different type of enrgy source

1. Thrmal prime movers : Eg: Heat Engines

2. Hydraullic prime movers:Eg: Turbines

3. Electric power prime mover:Eg: Electric Motor

Themal prime movers

Thermal prime movers include heat

engines ,nuclear power plants, geothemal
power plants, biogas power plants, solar
energy power plants.

The heat engines are further classified

as :

1. External combustion engine

2. Internal combustion engine

Hydraullic prime mover

Hydraullic prime mover include:

1. Hydraullic turbines power plant

2. Tidal power plant

3. Water turbine power plant
