Concept of curriculum management in the learning space
• Curriculum
 education plan managed by schools/educational institutions to achieve the education goals

• Learning space
 refers to the formal spaces where students will go through the process of learning guided
by teachers/lecturers.
 usually has a clear structure like a classroom, a lecture hall, a laboratory, tutorial rooms
etc.
 refers to the informal learning space like a library, a resource room for self-access learning
with or without teachers’ monitoring.

• Conclusion:
 the learning space includes classrooms, spaces outside the classroom where the T&L
processes occur.
 online learning?
Teachers’ role in curriculum management
• one of the teacher’s tasks is to manage the learning space as to ensure
the success of the teaching:

• how?
 physical environmental arrangement
 holding up procedures and rules
 maintaining the students’ involvement during the T&L process

• Why?
 maintain the conducive classroom environment in the T&L process
 pupils’ safety
 cleanliness
 convenient spaces
 enhance the pupils’ interest in learning
Learning space management
• a good learning space management will enable the
pupils to involve actively in the T&L process.
• the design of the learning space must be taken
seriously to ensure the space will have positive
impact to the T&L process.
• the learning space should enhance the pupils’
learning and encourage collaboration among them.
• must be flexible to be rearranged – 21st century
learning activities
Learning space management
• should be equipped with technology facilities as to support
the learning process
• aspects to be considered in learning space management:
flexibility, convenience, technology facilities, highly
stimulating, encourage collaboration, space is fully utilized
• other aspects depends on pupils’ need such as inclusive
classes.
• must consider Universal Design for Learning (UDL) for all
classroom – equal opportunity for pupils to succeed
1.1 Physical learning space
size and space
furniture arrangement
number of pupils
lighting
ventilation
cleanliness
colour
technological facilities
1. Size and space
• condusive for learning process
• Standard size 72m2 (9m x 8m)
• Easy for teacher and pupils to move around
• Safety
• Flexibility of the learning space is important to apply the 21 st century learning

2. Furniture arrangement
• depends on the age groups
• Important to observe the pupils’ position (opposite to the board)
• should not hinder the pupils to take part and move actively
• pupils have easy access to the T&L resources
3. Number of pupils
• ideal number of pupils per class is 20-25
• too many pupils will effect the learning space - crowded
• limited movement of the pupils and teacher
• class control will be less effective
• pupils feel bored, uneasy and lack of concentration- could affect the learning objective

4. lighting
• impact to the pupils’ mood, emotion and convenience
• a form of energy to help the retina forming the image
• must comply with the established standards MS 1525:2014 – 300 to 500 lux
• not too dim nor too bright
• the windows play an important role
• Barnitt (2003): the best lighting is a combination of the natural and electrical lighting
(depending on the size of classroom)
5. ventilation
• Thermal comfort is the set of mind that shows satisfaction towards the environment
temperature
• Factors that influence thermal comfort are the air temperature, humidity and the air speed
• Circulation and the air velocity can be assisted with fan
• Window size, furniture arrangement and the position of the door can affect the circulation of
the air (in and out)

6. cleanliness
• The learning space must be at the high level of cleanliness to ensure the comfort of
the pupils.
• Fail to manage the issue on rubbish in schools
• Educate the pupils to have self discipline especially on cleanliness
7. colours
• colour has its own role in creating an atmosphere for a space
• Mcleod (2016): colour is a medium to create harmonious atmosphere
• appropriate and suitable colours can influence the emotions and pupils’ behaviour
• examples : natural colours

8. technology facilities
• the role of technology is now increasingly important in education
• digital based learning is one of the effective ways in increasing pupils’ motivation in
class.
• 21st century learning inisiative
• T&L process will be more effective, interesting and captivating.
1.2 digital learning space
• 21st century transformation in education
• the urge to understand and upgrade the dynamics in the process of
T&L
• digital learning space is to support T&L process
• should be well equipped with technology gadgets and hardware to
make the learning more interactive and self learning
• digital learning space should allow teachers and pupils to use
multimedia and digital
• virtual learning space refers to any chance that can enable learning
takes place any access to education resources
• learning management system (LMS) such as Google classroom,
schoology, etc
• pupils are free to connect to the teacher or their friends, teachers can
assist pupils any time
• flexibility to both teacher and pupils
1.3 family learning space
• parents’ involvement in children education is always associated to
pupils’ academic achievement
• parents can provide special space for their children to study at home
– family learning space
• the concept of family learning space is to give the comfortable
learning environment
• taking into consideration of all the aspects of learning space i.e :
lighting, ventilation, furniture etc.
• to boost the children interest and motivation, have suitable
decoration
• above all, it depends on how well the parents can afford to prepare
the family learning space
2.0 online learning
• one of the ways of T&L process
• using digital / technology
• the platform is widely use especially during the pandemic covid-19
• ICT has proven to be faster, efficient and effective
• advantages and disadvantages
• 2 approaches of online learning : synchronous and asynchronous
2.0 online learning
2.1 synchronous
• learning involves students interacting with the teacher in real time
• regardless number of participants, location and distances
• optimize the usage of ICT
• examples: video conference, webinar,

2.2 asynchronous
• learning involves interacting outside the class hour and at their own place
• flexible time for learning takes place
• students with various style of learning find this approach to be most
helpful as they have the liberty to learn using their own learning style
• importantly, this approach educate pupils to be responsible towards their
own learning
3.0 relationship teacher-student-content
3.1 relationship teacher – content
• vital for teachers to know in details the contents of the subject
• the content is an element that explains the knowledge & skills and teachers’
mastery of the subject taught
• however, pedagogical aspect also plays an important role
• the importance of teacher-content relationship can be seen when a teacher
knows the subject well, he/she will be well prepared to deliver the content to the
pupils
• teachers with good understanding of the curriculum will act allign with what is
stated in Standard 4, Standard Kualiti Pendidikan Malaysia (SKPM) Kualiti
@Sekolah
• find the most effective way to impart the knowledge/skills to the students
• mastering the content, he/she will be able to pack, unpack and repack the
curriculum
• in the implementation of deep learning, the unpack curriculum will help the
teacher to achieve 3 aspects: what the pupils will learn, how the pupils will learn
and how do the pupils know that they have learnt
3.0 relationship teacher-student-content
3.2 relationship teacher – student
• meaningful in the effort to produce harmonious and balanced students
• teachers plays the utmost essential role to build good relationship with the
students
• teachers have to understand that it is not only their role to teach the students
but it is also their responsible to have a strong bond with their students
• the implications of teacher-student relationship:
 increase students’ trust (open, passion, patience, sincere know the students’
background)
 increase students’ motivation (simplest way is to remember the students’
names)
 students’ active involvement (encourage and create ways to give students
opportunities to succeed)
 help to improve students’ achievement (teachers will find ways to help
especially the wek students)
 help overcome students’ issues (personal issues, anxiety, stress)
3.0 relationship teacher-student-content
3.2 relationship teacher – student
• Implications of teacher –students relationships in the context of PCDL
 Global competency (attitude, citizenship, communication etc)
 Sharing new knowledge/learning (good relationship will create good learning
atmosphere)
 Expand the learning space (not only in the classroom but beyond the
classroom)
3.0 relationship teacher-student-content
3.3 relationship student – content
• in order for students to understand the content, teachers have to plan the
learning process appropriately
• students have different style of learning
• many ways to deliver the content (concept/theory, skill/practical)
• If the students could grab the gist of the content with the teachers’ help, it would
help in the students’ academic performance
• The implications of student-content relationship in the context of PCDL
 Students know and master the content taught by the teacher deeply
 Students get involve in the T&L process effectively
 Students achieve the success criteria listed
• Students who master the content will be able to discuss thoroughly about it,
change opinion, use their own words to explain about the content and will be
able to come up with the concrete conclusion
• Teachers have to be alert and selective with the materials prepared to ensure
the students can catch up easily
