BASIC
CONCEPTS
CAPACITORS

In defibrillators, capacitors are used to store a

large amount of energy in the form of an
electrical charge that can be released in a short
period of time.
Capacitors are devices that stores electric
potential energy and an electrical charge. Its
SI unit is Farad (F), after Michael Faraday.
1 Farad is equal to 1 C/V
ELECTRIC FIELDS
In the previous report, we know
that an electric field is a region
that surrounds an electric charge
or a group of charges in which
another charge experiences a
force
Familiar?
So, how is an
electric field
related to a
capacitor?

a vacuum (space) between
two plates, the stored
charges gives rise to an
electric field.
ELECTRIC FIELDS
IN CAPACITORS

In a simple parallel-plate capacitor, a

voltage applied between two conductive
plates creates a uniform electric field
between those plates. The electric field
strength in a capacitor is directly
proportional to the voltage applied and
inversely proportional to the distance
between the plates.
And we can
calculate the
energy in these
fields…

SAMPLE PROBLEM #1
The two metal plates of a capacitor are separated by an air
gap of 0.5 mm. The capacitor is connected across a 9V
battery. What is the electric field between the two plates?
Calculate the energy stored inside the electric field.

SAMPLE PROBLEM #2
An air–filled capacitor consists of two parallel plates, each
with an area of 7.60 cm^2 and separated by a distance of 1.80
mm. If a 20.0-V potential difference is applied to these plates,
calculate (a) the electric field between the plates, (b) the
capacitance, (c) the energy stored in the electric field
Where,

E = electric field energy

V = voltage
d = distance
C = capacitance
Ε0 = permittivity of free space (8.854 x 10^-12 F/m)
k = 1 (constant for air)
A = area
Uc = energy stored in a capacitor
Ue = energy stored in an electric field of a capacitor
