Past tense of い -adjectives

 In order to say how something was:

 For past tense change the ~ い to ~ かった

 So “ It’s hot.”
 あつい です。

 Becomes “ It was hot.”

 あつかった です。

There is only one exception to this rule:

いい (good) becomes よかった (was good). Just learn this.
 Negative of い -adjectives

In order to say something IS NOT:

For the negative, change the ~ い to ~ くない

So “ It’s hot.”

 あつい です。

Becomes “ It isn’t hot.”

 あつくない です。
 Negative past for い -adjectives

In order to say how something was not:

In the negative past, change the ～い to ～くなかった

So, “ It’s hot.”

 あつい です。

Becomes “ It was not hot.”

 あつくなかった です。
 Past tense for な -adjectives

In order to say something was:

 There is no な before the desu
 There is no change to the なー adjective itself
 The verb changes to past tense

So へん です。 It is strange.

ｂ ecomes へん でした。 It was strange.

（ Notice that in either a verb OR adjective ,
a final ～た indicates a past tense ）
 Negative voice for な adjectives

In order to say it is not:

There is no な before です。
There is no change to the な -adjective itself
Remember すき じゃない です。 for “Don’t like.”?

So へん です。 It is strange.

ｂ ecomes へん じゃない です。 It was strange.

 Negative past voice for な adjectives

In order to say “It was not ….” ｔ here is no

change to the な -adjective itself 。
Add ~ じゃなかった です instead of です
So
へん です。 It is strange.

Notice じゃなかった is the past tense of ~ じゃない (isn’t) which is an い
adjective
 Changing い adjectives

Change It is fun. たのしいです。 to past, and it

becomes たのしかったです。 It was fun.

Change It is fun. たのしいです。 to negative, and it

becomes たのしくないです。 It isn’t fun.

 Change It is fun. たのしいです。 to negative past,

and it becomes たのしくなかったです。 It
was’ ｔ fun.
 Changing な adjectives

Change すてき です。 It is nice.

to past and it becomes すてき でした。 I ｔ was
nice.

Change すてき です。 It is nice.

to negative and it is すてき じゃない です。 I ｔ
isn’t nice.

Change すてき です。 It is nice. to past negative

and it becomes すてき じゃなかった です。 I ｔ
wasn’t nice.
