BASIC STEPS

OF
SCIENTIFIC METHOD
The scientific method is a
process that involves
observation, data gathering,
experimentation and
analysis.
1. MAKE OBSERVATIONS
to observe during a scientific experiment. It means
to notice what's going on through your senses, but,
more specifically, we can define observation as the
act of knowing and recording something. This has
to do with both the act of knowing what's going on,
and then recording what happened.
2. COME UP WITH A QUESTION

write a question that is going to be simple,

measurable, attainable, relevant, and limited to a
particular time and place. Avoid why questions.
3. Develop a Hypothesis or
Prediction
Hypotheses are often specific predictions about what
will happen in a particular study. They are developed
by considering existing evidence and using reasoning to
infer what will happen in the specific context of
interest.
Hypothesis is an educated guess or tentative answer
to a problem.
Variables
Identifying and controlling variables involve the
process of deciding which variables o factors will
influence the outcome of an experiment, situation or
event and deliberately control all recognized variables
in a systematic manner.

Variables in an experiment may be independent or

dependent.
Independent Variable – the variable that is
being manipulated or controlled.

Dependent Variable – changes because of a

test. It is the effect that arises from the
changes in the independent variable
4. Conduct an Experiment or
Test the Hypothesis

An experiment is a deliberate attempt to manipulate a

situation, in order to test a hypothesis that a particular
cause creates a particular effect, in other words that
varying the input will affect the output.
5. Record and Analyze the
Result

Experiment results can be replicated and

confirmed thanks to detailed records. They can
also expose procedural errors that result in bad
outcomes.
6. Draw Conclusions
means making a statement summing up what
you have learned from an experiment. The
conclusion of an experiment is usually related to
the hypothesis. You may recall that a hypothesis
is a possible explanation for a set of observations
or answer to a scientific question.
