"Application of other Forms of Practice"

(Potential Applications of Mental

Practice/Imagery)
MENTAL PRACTICE AND IMAGERY

*Mental Practice - is the rehearsal of a skill, without

observable movement, with the intent of learning the
skill. It may involve verbal reputation, thinking about
movement,problem-solving or imagining performance.

*Imagery - is using all the senses to create or recreate an

experience in the mind that can occur in the absence of
movement.
It also include OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING;

-It is learning by observing others perform and copying that

behaviour or skill. The learner simulates sensations and
experiences related to skills without actually physically
performing the skill. This learning is used for three functions such
that skill, strategy, and performance.

Mental Practice and Imagery benefits include enhancing

performance, learning and practising tactics, managing
psychological skills, and coping with injury and heavy training.
DECISION-MAKING AND SIMULATION PRACTICE

* The skill of quickly and accurately selecting the correct

option from a variety of options.
* A practice using an apparatus that imitates
components of the real skill performance.

IMAGERY ABILITY

* Is a learner's ability to imagine performing the skill. It also

measured by vividness and controllability.Vividness is the
clarity and sharpness of imagery where learners really feel
as if they are in the situation performing.Controllability is the
ease and accuracy of generating and manipulating the
content of imagery.
There are 3 common THEORIES which suggest how Mental
practice and Imagery enhance performance:
Neuromuscular -Imagery creates
neuromuscular activity
Explanation similar to physical
performance of the skill,
creating muscle memory.

Cognitive -Imagery helps develop a

cognitive plan or blueprint
Explanation for movement.

Functional equivalence -Imagery of movement is

and neurophysiological functionally equivalent to
movement in its preparation, but
Explanation without execution.
Imagery Perspective can be either INTERNAL or EXTERNAL:

-Internal Imagery Perspective describe experiencing

practice from inside the body, as if you were completing
the task from a first-person point of view.

-External Imagery Perspective describe experiencing

practice as if you were watching yourself complete the
task outside the body.
PERFORMANCE

Mental Practice/Imagery can be effective forms of

practice, there are several variables which will
influence the effectiveness of practice.These
include the type of skill being practiced, the
performers imagery ability, and the performers
imagery perspective.
