Parts of Speech?
Parts of Speech : a class of words (noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb,
preposition, conjunction, and interjection) identified according to the kinds
of ideas they express and the way they work in a sentence.

Why should we study Parts of Speech?

• To be able to speak correctly and confidently


• To understand the function of words in a sentence
• To write grammatically correct sentences

In the following slides we will learn more about the different parts of speech.
Noun
Definition:
A noun is a word that represents a person, thing, concept, or place.

Examples:

Tree Santa Claus Indian Eiffel tower


Pronoun
Definition:
A pronoun is a word that is used instead of a noun or a noun phrase.

Examples:

he/him them/ they/ us me it


Verb
Definition:
A verb is an action word or a word that what tells someone or
something does.
Examples:

sit laugh run jump


Adjective
Definition:
An adjective is a word that is used to describe a noun. It describes what
the noun looks, smells, sounds, feels or tastes like.

Examples:

Bright Sweet Happy Pretty Green


Adverb
Definition:
An adverb can be added to a verb to modify its meaning. It tells us
when, where, how, to what extent an action is performed.
Examples:
Preposition
Definition:
A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show its
relationship to some other word in the sentence.
Examples:
Conjunction
Definition:
A conjunction is a joining word – it joins words, phrases or clauses
(sentences) together.
Examples:
Interjection
Definition:
An interjection is word that expresses emotions and feelings.
