THE MONA LISA

• The Mona Lisa is one of the most

valuable and famous paintings in the
world. It's an oil painting on a poplar
wood panel created by Leonardo da
Vinci. The subject of the painting is
Lisa Gherardini, the wife of
Francesco del Giocondo, a wealthy
Florentine silk merchant.
She was a 24-year-old mother of five when she sat
for the High Renaissance master in 1503. The
painting is known for the sitter’s mysterious smile
and her unproven identity, which have made the
work a source of ongoing investigation and
fascination.
