ISTI’ADHA

• To seek refuge in Allah


• A supplication
• Protection from
Getting muddled
Lack of reflection
THE COMMAND

‫ی‬ ‫ِإَّم ا ن َغ َّن ِم ٱلَّش ۡیَطٰـِن َن ۡز ࣱغ َفٱ ۡس ِع ۡذ ِبٱلَّل ِۚه ِإَّن ۥ ِمَس ی ِل‬ •
‫ُه ٌع َع ٌم‬ ‫َت‬ ‫َو َی َز َك َن‬
• If Satan should prompt you to do something, seek refuge with
God- He is all hearing, all knowing- [Al-A’raaf 7:200]
‫ِإَّن ٱَّلِذ یَن َجُی ٰـِد ُلوَن ِفۤی َءاَیٰـِت ٱلَّلِه ِبَغ ۡیِر ُس ۡلَطٰـٍن َأَتٰىُه ۡم ِإن ِفی ُص ُد وِرِه ۡم ِإاَّل ِك ۡب ࣱر‬ •
‫َّم ا م ِب ٰـِلِغی ِۚه َفٱ ۡسَتِع ۡذ ِبٱلَّل ِۖه ِإَّن ۥ ٱلَّس ِم ی ٱ ۡل ِص‬
‫ُع َب ُری‬ ‫ُه ُه َو‬ ‫ُه َب‬
• As for those who, with no authority to do so, dispute God’s
messages, there is nothing in their hearts but a thirst for a
greatness they will never attain. Seek refuge in God, for He is
the All Hearing, the All Seeing. [Ghafir 40:56]
‫ی‬ ‫ِإَّم ا ن َغ َّن ِم ٱلَّش ۡیَطٰـِن َن ۡز ࣱغ َفٱ ۡس ِع ۡذ ِبٱلَّل ِۖه ِإَّن ۥ ٱلَّس ِم ی ٱ ۡل ِل‬ •
‫ُع َع ُم‬ ‫ُه ُه َو‬ ‫َت‬ ‫َو َی َز َك َن‬
• If a prompting from Satan should stir you, seek refuge with
God: He is the All Hearing and the All Knowing. [Fussilat
41:36]
ACKNOWLEDGING
ALLAH

• Should be read to ward off the influence of


Shaytan, who is a sworn enemy to mankind
• Ta’awwudh cleans the tongue.
• Seeking assistance from Allah
• Acknowledging his might and accepting one’s
weakness and powerlessness against any evil.
• We should acknowledge the might of Allah or
else we fall into the trap of the original sin of
pride
THE ACCURSED

• Shaytan comes from ‫ شطن‬to be far


• As he is distant from any good
• So includes both humans in djinn
‫• َوَك َذٰ ِلَك َجَع ۡل َنا ِلُك ِّل َنِبٍّی َع ُد ࣰّوا َش َیٰـِط َنی ٱ ۡلِإ نِس َو ٱ ۡلِج ِّن‬
• [6:112] And so We have made for every prophet enemies
—devilish humans and jinn
• Rajim means accursed. Lit. thrown out.
R E L AT I O N S H I P W I T H
THE QURAN

‫َفِإ َذا َق ۡأ َت ٱ ۡل ُق ۡر اَن َفٱ ۡس َتِعۡذ ِبٱلَّلِه ِم ٱلَّش ۡی َطٰـِن ٱلَّرِج یِم‬ •
‫َن‬ ‫َء‬ ‫َر‬
• [Prophet], when you recite the Quran, seek
God’s protection from the outcast, Satan. [An-
Nahl 16:98]
• “When you intend to read”
• Not part of the Quran but is only to be read for
the Quran

‫أعوذ باهلل من الشيطان الرجيم‬ •


• I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed
Shaytan
‫أعوذ باهلل السميع العليم من الشيطان الرجيم‬ •
• I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing All-
Knowing, from the accursed Shaytan
‫اللهم إين أعوذ بك من إبليس وجنوده‬ •
• O Allah I seek refuge in You from Iblis and his
forces
• Add and remove names of Allah and Iblis
BASMALAH

• To read Bismillahir Rahman


Ar-Rahim

‫• بسم اهلل الرمح ن الرحيم‬


• In the name of Allah, the Most
Merciful, the Most
Compassionate
BASMALAH IN THE
QURAN

• Part of Qur’an
• Part of every surah?
• Except start of Bara’a
• (Not written, narrated, anger, maybe
from Anfal)
• Still found 114 times due to the letter of
Sulaiman [An-Naml 27:30]
‫ِإَّن ۥُه ِم ن ُس َلۡی َم ٰـ َو ِإَّن ۥُه ِبۡس ِم ٱلَّلِه ٱلَّرۡح َم ٰـِن ٱلَّرِح یِم‬ •
‫َن‬
THE UTENSIL BAA

• Written in unique way from the time of Uthman


• Appreciate the letter with which the Quran starts with
• Joining Allah’s name to whatever it is you are doing
• Why is attaching Allah’s name important?
• Receive barakah - becomes blessed, stable and
increase
• So acts are incomplete without Bismillah
• The utensil baa - will not yield the required results
• Start with Allah’s name before mentioning what it is
you are doing
• Before thinking of task remember Allah is primary
