CHILDHOOD STORIES

• Rizal's first memory is of joyful days in the family garden when he was a
child. - Rizal's parents took special care of him because he was a small kid
who got sick frequently. - Nipa Cottage, his father Francisco Mercado built
him a nipa cottage to play during daytime
• Angelus Prayer, his mother gathered all of his children at twilight to pray the
Angelus. - His “aya” would scare him during dinner, telling him that if he
didn't eat, a monster or a bombay would take him.

examinations in Christian Doctrine, reading, and arithmetic.

•He studied in Ateneo for 5 years (1872-1877) where he finished with


highest honors. When he entered Ateneo, he was quiet and was not yet
fluent in Spanish. After a week, he was promoted and after a month, he
became the top student of his class.
