A free, objective, skilled media is an essential
component of any democratic society. On the one
hand, it provides the information which the polity
require to make responsible, informed decisions.
On the other, it performs a “checking function”
ensuring that elected officials uphold their oaths of
office and campaign promises and that they carry
out the wishes of the electorate. This paper,
produced by the US Agency for International
Development (USAID), proposes that the aim
should be to transfer the media from direction or
control by government or private interest to a
situation of editorial freedom exercised in the
public interest. The ultimate goal should be to

5. Serve as the channel for
the advocacy of political
viewpoints.
According to Marlo Amaro (2018), the role of media in a democratic society
is very important because, it is the tool to educate the voters, giving them
facts, news and balanced opinions about how the government run and
managed. It is vital to have well-informed voters in a democratic society to
ensure the accountable and responsible government. Well informed society
should be able to make rational choices, making sure that the government
works as the people wants.
Media act as a catalyst for democracy and development, helping to make
public participation meaningful .If media is honest and committed in its job,
democracy is bound to function more efficiently and the loopholes present in
any democratic system can certainly be plugged to the fullest satisfaction of
the people. On the contrary, if media is biased, corrupt and favours only a
particular party or few individuals, it can prove to be very dangerous for the
smooth functioning of democracy.
The media are vital for the creation and the
development of a democratic culture in any country.
They provide people with information, which
influences the process of shaping opinions and
attitudes and of making political choices. Therefore,
the media must be free, pluralistic and independent,
and at the same time they should voluntarily assume
social accountability.
