RIZAL GRAND TOUR IN EUROPE WITH

Visited Rizal in Berlin


before Christmas of 1887.

He financed the printing


of Noli by giving Rizal
P300.
Rizal received Paciano’s remittance of P1,000
which was forwarded by Juan Luna from Paris.
Rizal immediately paid Viola P300 that he used
for the publication of his novel.
Rizal planned to visit important places in
Europe and Dr. Maximo Viola agreed to be his
traveling companion.
May 11, 1887
Rizal and Viola, two brown-skinned doctors on a
roaming spree, left Berlin by train.

Rizal and Viola tarried for
some time in Dresden.
Their visit coincidence
with the regional floral
exposition.

Blumentritt lived.

At 1:30 pm on May 13,
1887, the train arrived at
the railroad station of
Leitmeritz. Professor
Blumentritt was at the
station carrying a pencil
sketch of Rizal which he
sent to identify his friend.

Leitmeritz by train.
PRAGUE
Rizal and Viola visited the
historic city of Prague.
They carried letters
of recommendation from
Blumentritt to Dr. Wilkom,
a professor at the
University of Prague.

Rizal and Viola visited the
“Tomb of Copernicus.”
VIENNA
 On May 20 they arrived
at Vienna capital of
Austria-Hungary.
VIENNA
They met Norfenfals, one
of the greatest novelists of
that time.

Rizal and Viola stayed
while in Vienna.

 They also meet two good


friends of Blumentritt-
Masner and Nordman,
Austrian scholars.

VOYAGE TO LINTZ
 On May 24, Rizal and Viola
left Vienna on a riverboat to
see the beautiful sights of the
Danube River.

 Rizal also noticed


passengers using paper
napkins during meals, which
he described as novel.
FROM LINTZ TO
RHEINFALL
 The river voyage ended
in Lintz. They traveled
overland to Salzburg and
from there to Munich
where they sojourned for
a short time to savor the
famous Munich beer,
reputed to be the best in
Germany.

 They also went to
Nuremberg, one of the
oldest cities in Germany.
CROSSING THE FRONTIER
TO SWITZERLAND

 From Rheinfall, they crossed


the frontier to Schaffhausen,
Switzerland. They stayed in
this city from June 2 to 3
1887. They continued their
tour to Basel (Bale), Bern
and Lausanne.
GENEVA
 Rizal and Viola left on a little
boat, crossing the foggy
Leman Lake to Geneva. This
Swiss city is one of the most
beautiful cities in Europe,
visited by world tourists every
year. The people of Geneva
were linguistics-speaking
French, German, and Italian.
Rizal conversed with them in
these three languages.
 On June 19, 1887, Rizal treated Viola to
a blowout. It was his 26th birthday.

EXPEDITION
 While Rizal, accompanied by
Dr. Viola, was happily touring
Europe, an exposition of the
Philippines was held in
Madrid, Spain.

 Rizal received sad news from
his friends in Madrid of the
deplorable conditions of the
primitive Igorots who were
exhibited in this exposition,
some of them died, and
whose scanty clothing (G-
strings) and crude weapons
were objects of mockery and
laughter by the Spanish
people and press.
RIZAL IN ITALY
 From Geneva, Rizal and
Viola went to Italy. He
visited Turin, Milan,
Venice, and Florence.
On June 27,1887, he
reached Rome, the
“Eternal City” and also
called the “City of
Caesars.”
RIZAL IN ITALY
 After a week of
wonderful sojourn in
Rome, he prepared to
return home to the
Philippines. He wrote to
his father that he was
coming home.
