Rizal’s Grand Tour of Europe
with Viola (1887)

Rizal had received Paciano’s
remittance of 1000 pesos which was
forwarded by Juan Luna from
Paris. He immediately paid Viola
300 pesos which the latter kindly
loaned so that the Noli could be
printed.
The Tour Begins

May 11, 1887
 Rizal and Viola begin their tour in Europe.
 They left Berlin by train and it was spring which is
an ideal season of travel.
 According to Viola, the luggage of Rizal included
all letters he had received from his family and
friends.
Their destination is Dresden “one of the best cities
in Germany”.

Visit the regional floral exposition, Rizal who
was interested in Botany.
Visited Dr. Adolph B. Meyer, who was overjoyed
to see them in the Museum of Art.
Rizal was deeply impressed by a painting of
“Prometheus Bound”.
While strolling in the Floral Exposition the met
Dr. Jagor.

First Meeting with
Blumentritt

May 13, 1887 (Leitmeritz)
At 1:30 p.m. they arrived at the rail road station
of Leitmeritz, Bohemia.
Professor Blumentritt, was carrying a pencil
sketch of Rizal and Viola get a room at Hotel
Krebs.
They stayed in Leitmeritz from May 13 to May
16 1887.

Professor Blumentritt’s children are Dolores ( called
Dora or Dorita by Rizal), Conrad and Fritz.
Rizal met the town mayor was amazed by speaking
German fluently.
To commemorate his happy hours at the Blumentritt
home, Rizal painted a portrait of the kind professor.
Rizal met Dr. Carlos Czepelak a polish scholar and
Professor Robert Klutschak an eminent naturalist.
On May 16, 1887, 9:45 A.M. Rizal and Viola left
Leitmeritz by train.

Rizal and Viola met Dr.
Willkomm and showed them the
city’s historic spots.
They visited the Tomb of
Copernicus.

Vienna

On May 20, Rizal and Viola arrived in
Vienna.
Vienna was truly the “Queen of the
Danube”.
Rizal and Viola met Norfental – one of
the greatest novelist in Europe.
In Vienna, Rizal received his diamond
stickpin.

Danubian Voyage
to Lintz

May 24, Rizal and Vienna
on a river boa to see the
beautiful sights of the
Danube River.

From Lintz to Rheinfall

The river voyage ended in Lintz
They travel overload to Salzburg
from there to Munich.
They drink Munich beer, reputed to
be the best in Germany.
They visited Ulm.

Crossing the Frontier to
Switzerland

They crossed the frontier to
Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
Rizal and Viola stayed in this city
from June 2 to June 3, 1887.
They continued their tour to Basel
(Bale), Bern, and Laussane.
Geneva

After sightseeing in Lausanne, Rizal and Viola left
on a boat, crossing the foggy Leman Lake to
Geneva.
June 19, 1887, Rizal treated Viola to a blow-out
for celebration of his 26th birthday.
Rizal and Viola spent fifteen delightful days in
Geneva.
June 23, parted ways- Viola returned to
Barcelona while Rizal continued the tour to Italy.

Madrid Exposition

Exposition of the Philippines was held in
Madrid, Spain.
Conditions of primitive Igorots.
June 6, 1887 – Rizal wrote a letter to
Blumentritt expressing his anger.
June 19, 1887 – Another letter to
Blumentritt saying that he is in favor of the
exposition.
Rizal in Italy

From Geneva, Rizal went to Italy
He visited Turin, Milan, Venice, and Florence
June 27, 1887- he reached Rome, the “Eternal City”
and “City of the Caesars”
June 27, 1887- he wrote a letter to Blumentritt
describing the sights and memories of Rome
“Grandeur that was Rome”
June 29th, Feast Day of St. Peter and St. Paul, Rizal
visited for the first time the Vatican
