reason for Rizal's
exile:
1. For publishing anti-Church books and articles
2. Possession of Pobres Frailes, leaflets containing
advocacies banned by Spain
3. For dedicating his El Filibusterismo to the three
martyr priests--Gomez, Burgos Zamora; putting “the
only salvation for the Philippines was separation
from the mother country (Spain)” on the novel’s title
page
4. Criticizing religion and aiming for its exclusion in the
Filipino culture

Arrival
July 14, 1982- he was notified that he would be taken to Dapitan in M
10:00pm. At 1 am boat “Cebu” sailed to Dapitan

WAS GIVEN A GOOD CABIN ON DECK, MARKED "JEFES"

Boat "CEBU" arrived in Dapitan July 17th

Father Superior  Pastells informed Father Obach 
that Rizal could live at the parish convent on the
following conditions:

"make a public retraction of his religious errors,


issue statements unmistakably pro-Spanish,
undergo the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius
make a general Confession,
lead a model religious and pro-Spanish life"

On October 25th 1892, it is believed that
Rizal would devote himself to
agriculture. Stating that "if my situation
changes and I could enjoy full freedom
to cultivate"

Rizal built a school and dormitory that started with
3 and end up with 21 young boys from prominent
families
They have free matriculation; he made them help
him instead in his various works like community

it to Blumentritt as a gift

AS A PHYSICIAN

Rizal provided free medical service to his patients, most of them


underprivileged
But he also had wealthy patients like Don Francisco Azcarraga who paid
him a cargo of sugar
August 1983, he treated his mother Teodora Agoncillo on her third
ophthalmology surgery
Operation was successful but Doña Teodora disobeyed Rizal and removed
her bandages early, leading to irritation and infection.
As an agriculturist

Rizal started a 16 hectare farm; he expanded to 70 hectares of


fruit-bearing trees
He planted cacao, coffee, sugarcane, and coconuts
He invested in and imported various agricultural machineries
from America and taught the locals the modern agricultural
methods
Rizal thought of transforming another town nearby, Sitio Ponot,
as a cattle-raising and cash-crop farm land; it never materialized
for the local government didn’t supported him
As a businessman
Rizal invested in fishing, copra, and hemp
industry together with his partner Ramon
Carreon
Rizal noted the potential of fishing in the
province in one of his letter to his brother-
in-law Manuel Hidalgo
Hemp is their most successful business,
where they ship to Manila
He organized the Cooperative Association of
Dapitan Farmers to break Chinese monopoly
As a scientist
Rizal and his pupils made researches in the field of
biology, botany, ethnography, geology, geography,
archaeology, and anthropology

He sends his specimen and researches


to museum in Europe, particularly in
Dressed Museum

He has an extensive collection of 203 sea shell

As a linguist
Rizal studied and made comparisons between the
Bisayan and Malay language existing in the region
He now has learned a total of 22 languages
As an artist
Rizal made paintings for the Sisters of Charity, as a
preparation for the arrival of the image of the Holy
Virgin

Painted other people and things that fascinated Rizal


in Dapitan like the plants and animals he’s
researching

He also made the sculptures “The Mother’s Revenge”


in clay depicting Syria avenging her puppy to a
crocodile which killed it, a wood carving of Josephine
Bracken called “Oyang Dapitana”, and “St. Paul the
Hermit” which he gave as a gift to Fr. Pastells

As a person with vice


According to one of his biographer, Wenceslao Retana, Rizal is a lottery
addict
In September 21, 1892, Rizal’s ticket Number 9736 won the second prize of
20,000 Php in lottery in Empresa de Reales Loteria Espanolas de Filipinas in
Manila
That’s 576,096 Php today, but was shared with two other winners named
Francisco Equillor and Captain. Carnicero, 6200 Php each
He gave 2000 Php to his father in Hong Kong, 200 Php to his friend Basa
who’s on Hong Kong too, and the rest was invested in agriculture in his
farm in Talisay

Josephine Bracken or Marie Josephine


Leopoldine Bracken was an eighteen
year old, Irish girl born in Hong Kong
when they met.
Born in Hong kong on October 3, 1876.  Daughter of James
Bracken and Elizabeth Jane Macbride who were both Irish in
citizenship.  Her mother died in childbirth.
She was adopted by Mr. George Taufer after the death of his
mother.
described as “slender, a chestnut blond, with blue eyes,
dressedwith elegant simplicity, with an atmosphere of
light(gaiety).”

Marie Josephine Leopoldine Bracken


Born in Hong kong on October 3, 1876.  Daughter of James
Bracken and Elizabeth Jane Macbride who were both Irish in

Pio Valenzuela and the Katipunan

A Filipino physician and revolutionary leader. At the


age of 23, he joined the society of Katipunan

Together with Andrés Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto,


they formed the secret chamber of the society called
Camara Reina

testified before a court martial against Rizal during


the investigation that would lead to the hero's
ultimate death.
