“ Crematorium with an

Integrated Columbarium “
A Study on Creating a Serene and
Meaningful Space for Remembrance.
01. Introduction and
Its Problems
Introduction
“Death is the only certainty in life, for the best of our knowledge all
the things that live must die one day. Thus death is and has
arguably always been a crucial part of mankind’s existence–
whether we choose to dwell on it or not.”-- Lindsay Anne Hall
(Death, Power and Body)

Architecture can impact the way we perceive and emotionally

experience death. While death is a universal phenomenon,
discussions around it are often avoided. The increasing demand
for land in urban areas and the rising pollution levels worldwide
have prompted the need for alternative solutions. The proposal
suggests integrating a crematorium with a columbarium as a
potential solution to these challenges.
Problems :
■ Availability : One of the problem is the availability of the
building itself. Iligan City doesn’t have any crematorium,
you’ll need to go to another city (Cagayan de Oro City) just
to find one, which it will take 3 long hours to get there.

■ Limited Awareness and Understanding : Another

problem is lack of awareness and understanding among
the community about the concept of a columbarium within
a crematorium. This could lead to misconceptions or
resistance to accepting this alternative form of
memorialization.
Problems :
■ Environmental Impact : Addressing concerns about
emissions and the impact on air quality.

■ Cultural and Religious Considerations : Different

cultures and religions have varying funeral and
memorialization practices. Addressing the cultural and
religious sensitivities of diverse communities within the
context of a columbarium within a crematorium can be a
complex task.
Religion and their way for Burial
02. Scope and
Limitations
Scope of the Study :
• Architectural Design and Functionality : This include
exploring the architectural design principles and
considerations when integrating a columbarium within a
crematorium. This can involve studying layout optimization,
space utilization, and creating a serene environment.

• Cultural and Religious Perspectives : The scope could

involve researching and understanding the cultural and
religious practices surrounding funeral rites and
memorialization. This can help in identifying ways to
accommodate diverse cultural and religious needs within
the columbarium.
Scope of the Study :

• Environmental Impact : The scope could include

examining the environmental benefits of cremation
compared to traditional burial methods. This can involve
studying the carbon footprint, land usage, and
sustainability aspects associated with a crematorium with a
columbarium.
Limitation of the Study :
■ Geographic Context : The scope may be limited to a
specific geographic area where the research is conducted.
Different regions may have varying cultural practices,
regulations, and availability of crematoriums with
columbariums.

■ Time and Resource Constraints : The scope may need to

be limited based on the available time and resources for
the research. It may not be feasible to study all aspects of
the topic comprehensively.
Limitation of the Study :

■ Ethical Considerations : The scope may require ethical

considerations, especially when dealing with sensitive
topics such as funeral practices and grief. Respect and
sensitivity towards the participants and their experiences
should be prioritized.
A crematorium with a columbarium can indeed have
environmental benefits, as cremation is generally considered to
be a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional burial methods.
Additionally, the compact design of a columbarium allows for
efficient use of space, reducing the amount of land required
compared to traditional cemeteries.
Additionally, having a columbarium within a crematorium can
create a serene and peaceful environment for remembrance
and reflection. The design and atmosphere of the columbarium
can be tailored to provide a tranquil space for families to visit
and honor their loved ones.
Thanks!
