What is Constructivism?
• A learning theory and educational philosophy that suggests
learners actively construct their own knowledge and
understanding of the world through experiences and
interactions. It emphasizes the importance of hands-on
learning, problem-solving, and social interaction in the
learning process. In a constructivist approach, learners are
encouraged to build upon their existing knowledge and
create a new meaning through exploration and reflection.
Two Views of Constructivism
The way in which individuals construct knowledge can be
viewed from different perspectives:

•Individual Constructivism- focuses on an

individual’s internal construction of knowledge.
•Social Constructivism- focuses on social
interaction and the construction of knowledge
within a social context.
CONSTRUCTIVISM IN TEACHING
The 21st century classroom is filled with a vibrant
assortment of learners.
Students come from different types of socio economic
backgrounds, with culturally experience, and learning
styles.
These dynamics create a challenge for teachers.
Teaching most always be adjusted to the level of the
pupils. So constructivist way of teaching be promoted in
Constructivism in Teaching;
 Constructivism teaching is based on the belief
that learning occurs as learners are actively involved
in a process of meaning and knowledge construction.
Learners are the makers of meaning and knowledge.
• Constructivism teaching fosters critical thinking
and creates motivated and independent learners.

Children learn more and enjoy learning

Education works best when it concentrates on thinking
and understanding rather than on rote memorization.
Boost the confidence of learners

The significant role of constructivism when it
comes to bridging learning gaps;
1. Individualized Learning- Constructivism recognizes
that learners come to the educational experience with
different prior knowledge and experiences. By
tailoring instruction to individual needs and allowing
students to build upon their existing understanding, it
can help bridge gaps in knowledge.
2. Active Engagement: Constructivist
approaches often involve hands-on activities,
problem-solving, and critical thinking. These
activities encourage students to actively
engage with the material, which can be
especially effective in addressing gaps in their
understanding.
3. Social Interaction- Social constructivism
emphasizes the importance of collaborative
learning and interaction with peers. Group
discussions and collaborative projects can
provide opportunities for students to learn
from each other and fill gaps in their
knowledge through peer teaching.
4. Real-World Relevance- Constructivism
promotes the idea that learning is most
effective when it is situated in meaningful,
real-world contexts. This approach can
help bridge the gap between abstract
concepts and practical application.
5. Reflection and Metacognition-
Constructivist methods often encourage
students to reflect on their learning
process and think about how they learn
best. This metacognitive awareness can
help students identify and address gaps
in their learning strategies.
Brighter side of constructivism:
Constructivism concentrates learning how to think and
understand.
Constructivist teacher develop skills and abilities
to empower students and to make them feel competent
and significant. Constructivist teaching also requires
intelligence, creativity, patience, responsiveness and
the ability to live.
•Students learn from each other as well
as from the teacher. Students learn
better by doing, allowing and creating
opportunities for all to promote new
ideas.
