The gear train shown is a candidate for the spindle

drive of a gear hobbing machine. The gear blank and

the worm gear (gear 10) are mounted on the same
shaft and rotate together. If the gear blank is to be
driven clockwise, determine the hand of the hob.
Also determine the velocity ratio (w8 / w6 ) to cut 72
teeth on the gear blank.
Problems
In the clock mechanism shown a pendulum
on shaft A drives an anchor. The pendulum
period is such that one tooth of the 30 tooth
escape wheel on shaft B is released every 2
seconds, causing shaft B to rotate once
every minute. Note that the second 64 tooth
gear is pivoted loosely on shaft D and is
connected by a tubular shaft to the hour
hand (i.e. the 28 tooth gear and the 64 tooth
gear have concentric but different shafts).
Show that the train values are such that the
minute hand rotates once every hour and
that the hour hand rotates once every
twelve hours. How many turns does the
drum on shaft F make every day?

Ferguson’s Paradox

Find the angular velocity of the various sun

gears and the planet gear. The next page
shows how the table can be constructed.
Verify using the formula directly.

The figure shows a schematic diagram of a
semiautomatic transmission from the Model-T
automobile. This was the forerunner of today's
automatic transmission. A plate clutch, two banded
clutches, and a system of pedals and levers (used to
engage and disengage these plate and band clutches)
operated in the proper sequence is shown in the table
below. Determine the output/input speed ratio for
each condition.
The bevel gear 2 is driven by the engine in the
reduction unit shown. Bevel planets 3 mesh
with the crown gear 4 and are pivoted on the
spider (arm), which is connected to the
propeller shaft B. N2 = 36 T, N3 = 21 T, N4 = 52
T. Crown gear 4 is fixed. Find the percent
speed reduction. Use either formula or tabular
method. Such systems are used in ships.
