The figure shows a schematic diagram of a
semiautomatic transmission from the Model-T
automobile. This was the forerunner of today's
automatic transmission. A plate clutch, two banded
clutches, and a system of pedals and levers (used to
engage and disengage these plate and band clutches)
operated in the proper sequence is shown in the table
below. Determine the output/input speed ratio for
each condition.
The bevel gear 2 is driven by the engine in the
reduction unit shown. Bevel planets 3 mesh
with the crown gear 4 and are pivoted on the
spider (arm), which is connected to the
propeller shaft B. N2 = 36 T, N3 = 21 T, N4 = 52
T. Crown gear 4 is fixed. Find the percent
speed reduction. Use either formula or tabular
method. Such systems are used in ships.
