AGENTS AND ENVIRONMENTS

Agents are entities that can

perceive their environment
through sensors and act upon that
environment through actuators.
Environments are the external
surroundings in which agents
operate, providing inputs and
receiving outputs
EXAMPLES OF INTELLIGENT AGENTS

1)Human Agent:
• Sensors: Eyes, Skin, Ears, Nose, Tongue
• Actuators: Hands, Legs

2)Robot Agent:
• Sensors: Camera, Informed range finders, etc
• Actuators: Various types of motors,
Printing devices, etc.
THE CONCEPT OF RATIONALITY

Rationality refers to making decisions

that lead to the best outcome based on
available information and knowledge. In
the context of agents, rationality
involves choosing actions that maximize
expected performance, considering both
immediate and long-term consequences.
THE NATURE OF ENVIRONMENT

Environments can vary in complexity, predictability, and dynamics. They can

be simple or complex, deterministic or stochastic, static or dynamic.
Understanding the nature of the environment helps agents adapt their strategies
accordingly.
THE STRUCTURE OF AGENTS

Agents consist of sensors to

perceive the environment, actuators
to perform actions, a knowledge
base to store information, and a
decision-making mechanism to
determine actions based on inputs
from sensors and knowledge.
TYPES OF AGENTS

• There are different types of agents, Learning

Goal-based
agents
1. SIMPLE REFLEX AGENT
• These agents make decisions based solely
on the current percept or stimulus without
considering past actions or future
consequences.
• Example: A vending machine that
dispenses a beverage when you insert
money and press a button. It reacts to your
selection without considering any other
factors.
2. MODEL BASED REFLEX AGENTS

• These agents maintain an internal state to

track changes in the environment and make
decisions based on that state.
• They use an internal model of the world to
anticipate how the environment might
change in response to their actions.
• Example: An autonomous vacuum cleaner
that builds a map of the room and uses it to
navigate efficiently.
3. GOAL BASED AGENTS
• These agents work towards achieving
specific goals by considering future
consequences of actions.
• They use planning and reasoning to
select actions that move them closer to
their desired goals.
• Example: A delivery robot that plans
its route to minimize delivery time
and maximize efficiency.
UTILITY BASED AGENTS
• These agents maximize utility or
happiness over time, considering costs
and benefits of different actions.
• They assign a utility value to each
possible action and choose the action
with the highest expected utility.
• Example: A self-driving car that
balances speed, safety, and fuel
efficiency to provide the most
comfortable ride for passengers.
5. LEARNING AGENTS:

• These agents improve their performance

over time through experience and
feedback from the environment.
• They use learning algorithms to update
their knowledge and adjust their
behavior based on observed outcomes.
• Example: An adaptive recommendation
system that learns user preferences over
time and provides personalized
recommendations.
CONCLUSION
In short, intelligent agents are pivotal
components of artificial intelligence, offering
diverse problem-solving approaches. By
understanding their nature, structure, and
types, we unlock possibilities for
applications like smart homes and
autonomous systems. Harnessing these
agents' capabilities promises ongoing
advancements, shaping a future where AI
enriches and transforms various aspects of
our lives.
