ILLUSTRATING UNION AND

INTERSECTION OF EVENTS
Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be

able to:
a. Illustrate union and intersection of events;
b. Solve problems involving union and
intersection of events
What are these symbols?

1. ∪
2. ∩
3. { }, Ø
4.
What are these symbols?

1. ∪ = union
2. ∩ = intersection
3. { }, Ø = null set
4. Venn diagram
Venn Diagram
In a six-sided die experiment:

A represents that the number is odd.

B represents the number that is a multiple of 3, and
C represents the number that is a multiple of 4.
The set of all possible outcome is called sample
space denoted by S
Therefore, S= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}

How many elements are there in a set?

n (S)= 6

Cardinality of a set
Event
-is a collection of outcomes.
-also a subset of a sample space

Based on this event there are 3 events, A, B, and C

What are the elements common to A and B?

The common element is 3

Union of events
The union of events, A or B, can be written as
A ∪ B.
What is A ∪ B?

A= {1, 3, 5} B= {3, 6}
A ∪ B ={ 1, 3, 5, 6}
Intersection of Events
A∩B
Elements found to both events A
and B

A= {1, 3, 5} B= {3, 6}
A ∩ B ={ 3 }
