Vegetation

Vegetation is an assemblage of plant species and the ground cover they provide. It is a general term, without
specific reference to particular life forms, structure, spatial extent, or any other specific botanical or geographic
characteristics.
The various types of vegetation are:
(i) Tropical Evergreen Forests
(ii) Tropical Deciduous Forest
(iii) Tropical Thorn Forest
(iv) Montane Forest
(v) Mangrove Forest
Importance of vegetation and wildlife

 Over 4% of the world’s wildlife and vegetation is present in India. The flora and fauna of the region not just
attract tourists but also bring stability to the ecosystem and balance to the earth.
 Wildlife is the wild species particularly undomesticated. They grow and live in wild places. They have high
economic and ecological importance.
Economic importance of wildlife and vegetation

Wildlife has a very high economic importance as we get many materials from animals such as:-
1. silk
2. timber
3. medicinal herbs
4. also helps in tourism
Vegetation also has great economic value as it helps provide food for livestock and personal consumption.
Cultivated vegetation or agriculture also has a huge impact on the economy.
Wood cutter of java

 The Kalangs of Java were skilled shifting cultivators.


 In 1755 when the Maratha kingdom split, the 6,000 Kalang families were split equally.
 The Dutch tried to make the Kalang work under them but they resisted by attacking the Dutch fort at Joana.
Dutch Forestry

 The Dutch introduced laws regarding the forest and imposed rents on land being cultivated. they exempted
some villages from these rents if they worked collectively. this was known as the Blandongdiensten system.
 In 1882, 280000 sleepers were exported from java.
War and deforestation

 forests were exploited and cut freely in India to meet the British war needs.
New developments in Forestry

 The growing awareness about the importance of forest and wildlife has made many government see the
scientific forestry.
 Conservation of forests has become the main goal rather than timber collection. Many cases across India,
dense forests have survived because the villages protected them in sacred groves.
Conclusion

 Forests have had a big importance in our lives and as well as throughout history.
