The First Commandment
Exodus 20: 3

You shall not have other God’s besides me.

1. It is a liberating truth.

In worshipping the One True God, we are freed from the

slavery of idolatry in the past and in the modern world today.

God demands exclusive loyalty that we may love Him with all
our whole heart, mind and soul.
2. It manifests our duty of worship.

To love and serve God in faith and in hope is our first duty and
privilege, recognizing the truth that He created us and
continually sustains us.

Our devotion to Mary and the Saints helps the faithful

in worshipping God for they are worthy models for
our imitation in living a Christian life because it is of
God’s grace that made them holy.
3. It forbids worshipping other gods than the
One True God.

It rules out all forms of idolatry,

which is the substitution of
someone or something else for
God.
