Immunization Programme

• Immunization Programme in India - 1978


• ‘Expanded Programme of Immunization’ (EPI) - Ministry
of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India
• 1985 - Modified as ‘Universal Immunization Programme’
(UIP)
• Implemented - Cover all districts in the country by 1989-90

• Provides several vaccines - Infants, children and pregnant


women (Universal Immunisation Programme)
• Diphtheria • Tuberculosis • Japanese Encephalitis (brain
• Pertussis • Measles fever)
• Tetanus • Hepatitis B • Meningitis and Pneumonia
(Haemophilus Influenzae type b)
• Polio
Role of WHO in Immunization Programme

• WHO - Working with countries and partners


• Improve global vaccination coverage - “Global Vaccine Action
Plan 2011-2020”
• Every year, WHO - Works with UNICEF - Produce national
immunization coverage estimates for Member States.

• Through the plan, WHO:


• Helps all countries to commit to immunization as a priority,
which means WHO works with them to set national targets
and plans, as well as allocate adequate financial and human
resources.

• Supports individuals and communities to understand the
value of vaccines and demand immunization as both
their right and responsibility.
• Develops plans and materials to ensure every person is
reached with vaccines.

safe and reliable vaccine supply systems.
• Develops targeted research and development
innovations for new and improved vaccines.

• Tamil Nadu - Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Perambalur, Madurai,
Virudhunagar, etc.
