Pre-conception Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act
1994
It is an act passed by the parliament of india with a goal
to stop female foeticides and stop the decline in sex ratio
of the country.
The first state to implement -- Maharashtra
Institutes under preview::
• Genetic counselling center
• Genetic labs
• Genetic clinics
• OB-GYN hospitals and clinics
• IVF centres
Objectives of PCPNDT
1. Ban the use of sex selection techniques before and after
conception.
2. Ban sex determination
3. Prevent misuse of technology for selected sex abortion
4. Prevent female foeticides
5. Stop the declining sex ratio in India.
FEATURES OF PCPNDT:::
1. Act provides for prohibition of sex selection before and after
conception
2. Regulates the use of pre Natal Diagnostic tests like USG and
Amniocentesis…they can be used for
Screnning genetic abnormalities metabolic disorders
Chromosomal abnormality hemoglobinopathy
Sex linked disorders IUGR,IUFD
AMENDMENT IN 2003
Amendment of the act mainly covered bringing the technique of pre
conception sex selection within the ambit of the act
1.Bringing ultrasound within its ambit
2.Harsh punishment
3.Empower central board for supervision
4.Regulate the sale of USG machines and other sex determining
technologies
