What is the 'Black Gold'
of Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is famous for its tea. The production
and manufacturing of tea is entirely carried out
in Sri Lanka. That is why it is called 'Black Gold'
of Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan tea was also called
Ceylon tea until the late 1900's. This is because
the original name of Sri Lanka was Ceylon. A
lion logo is present on Sri Lankan tea packages.
It indicates that the tea is manufactured in Sri
Lanka and also signifies the tea's origin and
quality. The use of this logo is monitored by the
Sri Lankan Tea Board, which governs the tea
industry in Sri Lanka.
History of Ceylon Tea
• Ceylon Tea production began in the mid 1800's
after Sri Lanka was attacked by a deadly fungus
called coffee rust. Before this fungal attack, Sri
Lanka used to produce coffee. However, after
the fungal attack, most of the coffee crop was
destroyed and so, the production of coffee
ended and the production of Ceylon Tea began.
James Taylor played a major role in cultivating
the first tea crop. He is regarded as one of the
fathers of Ceylon Tea. He had a lot of
knowledge in this sector, which he acquired in
North India. He carried out various experiments
and made delicious tea, which was sold at a
good price in the London auction. Since that
time, there has been a huge demand for Ceylon
tea all over the world. Even today, Ceylon Tea is
of huge demand in many countries.
