History of Ceylon Tea • Ceylon Tea production began in the mid 1800's after Sri Lanka was attacked by a deadly fungus called coffee rust. Before this fungal attack, Sri Lanka used to produce coffee. However, after the fungal attack, most of the coffee crop was destroyed and so, the production of coffee ended and the production of Ceylon Tea began. James Taylor played a major role in cultivating the first tea crop. He is regarded as one of the fathers of Ceylon Tea. He had a lot of knowledge in this sector, which he acquired in North India. He carried out various experiments and made delicious tea, which was sold at a good price in the London auction. Since that time, there has been a huge demand for Ceylon tea all over the world.
