CROP-WHEAT

INDONESIA

• Indonesia has not been able to produce wheat economically. Weather and climate conditions in Indonesia are suspected to be a
barrier factor for the growth of wheat in this country
Indonesia doesn't produce wheat and is entirely dependent on imported wheat from Australia for its flour milling sector
Wheat is widely cultivated in 15 provinces throughout the country and across 3 climate zones including the subtropical monsoon
climate zone, temperate monsoon climate zone and temperate continental climate zone and Indonesia falls in the Equatorial
region .
Wheat cannot be produced in tropical lowlands like Indonesia.

INDIA
• Wheat is one of the largest grown crop in India and one of the highest in the world.

• The Weather conditions required for the Growth of Wheat are favourable for India
• 107,860 thousand tonnes. Wheat production of India increased from thousand tonnes in 2020 growing at an
average annual rate of 3.42%.
• Wheat can be grown in areas with as little as 20-25 cm annual rainfall provided proper irrigation faculties are
available. About 5 to 7 watering are required in irrigated areas depending upon the amount of rainfall.

• t comprises Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, western UP, Rajasthan (except Kota and Udayapur divisions), foothills of
Uttaranchal, HP and J & K. This is the most important among the major zones and accounts for about 40 per cent
of area and 55 per cent of wheat production in the country.
• Wheat is grown in different types of soils in India. Although loams and clayey loams having good drainage are
considered suitable for wheats, good crops can also be raised in sandy loams and black soils.
• Wheat is a staple food in India besides rice. It is a Rabi crop that is sown in winters and harvested in the months of
spring. Hence, the sowing of the seeds also takes place in winters from October to December.
• Despite the fact that India is the world’s second-largest producer of wheat, producing 13.53 percent of the world’s
wheat, its wheat exports make up less than one percent of the world’s total. India produces about 107.59 million
tonnes of wheat each year, most of which is used for food at home.

The current major challenges facing future wheat production in India are increasing heat stress; dwindling water
supplies for irrigation; a growing threat of new virulence of diseases such as wheat rusts (yellow, brown, and
black) and leaf blight; continuous adoption of rice-wheat systems on around 11million hectares; changes in
urbanization patterns, and demand for better quality wheat.
