Principle of Laminar Flow Cabinet:
- Sterilize air through filter and blow it
across work surface as a particle-free
laminar air stream
Typical Laminar Air Flow velocity:
(0.3-0.5m/s)
Purpose of a Laminar Flow Cabinet:
-Product protection from room
contaminants (Does not protect operator)
-Not for biohazard agents/chemical fumes
• * Application suitability
(for product protection)
• * Work surface (stainless steel)
• * Enclosure side walls (transparent, metal)
• * Filter efficiency (HEPA/ULPA)
• * Electrical safety compliance
• * International standards (US, Australian)
• * Monitoring systems (Pressure/electronic
airflow alarms)
BIOLOGICAL SAFETY CABINET

Principle of BSC:
- Create inflow to protect the operator by exhausting air
from cabinet through HEPA
(High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter
Typical inflow velocity for BSC:
- Based on NSF/ANSI 49(US Standard): >0.5m/s
Purpose of BSC:
- High protection for personnel, products or experiment &
environment from risk associated with hazardous
microbiological agents.
BIOLOGICAL SAFETY CABINET
2. Eye irritation, burnt 3. UV Light attract dust, so it
skin needs periodical cleaning

1. To destroy microorganisms in the air/surface

4. Beware of UV
5. Close the window for
reflection from stainless
zero intensity
steel table
6. Laboratory need to be vacated when UV Light is on,
unless cabinet has front cover/sliding sash
1. DIGITAL ELECTRONIC DISPLAY TO INDICATE
SAFE/UNSAFE AIRFLOW

2. GERMICIDAL UV LIGHT IS ELECTRICALLY

INTERLOCKED FOR ADDED SAFETY TO
OPERATE ONLY WHEN THE FAN AND
FLUORESCENT LIGHTS ARE OFF & SASH IS
CLOSED

3. AUDIBLE/VISUAL WARNING SYSTEM FOR

UNSAFE AIR FLOWS AND WORK ACCESS
OPENING
1. Down flow velocity
2. Inflow velocity
3. Airflow smoke patterns
4. HEPA/ULPA filter leak
5. Site installation assessment tests
6. Cabinet leak test (only for A1 cabinet)
