PRESENTATION ON A

DEFICIENCY DISEASE
(Anemia)
What is deficiency disease

A deficiency disease is a disease caused by the lack of

an element in the diet, usually a particular vitamin or
mineral.

Deficiencies can lead to a variety of health problems.

These can include digestion problems , skin
disorders, weakness etc.
IMPACT OF IRON
DEFICIENCY ON
INDIAanemia has remained the top
Iron-deficiency
cause of disability in India for 10 years now.

The result of poverty, malnutrition, poor

sanitation and imbalanced vegetarian diet,
widespread anaemia has impacted the
productivity of India’s workforce.

WHAT IS ANEMIA?
●Anemia is a disease caused by below-normal levels of
hemoglobin or you can say deficiency of vitamin B12
which is used to make red blood cells.

●Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries

oxygen to the muscles, brain and other organs.

●If red blood cells carry insufficient oxygen, the body –

particularly the mind – cannot function well.
Why Anemia is caused?
The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency.
Without enough iron in the diet, the body cannot produce
enough hemoglobin.

The causes of anemia include:

✶ Eating meals that are mostly starches and grains

✶ Not eating balanced meals including meat, fruit and

vegetables, which contains vitamin A, B12, C and folic
acid that are needed to make red blood cells
Prevention of Anemia
The key to preventing iron deficiency is to eat a balanced diet.

Vitamin C will boost the iron. kids get it from foods such as
legumes, whole grains and vegetables!
Measures taken by Government to
prevent Anemia
 In order to prevent anemia among women and children,
National Iron Plus Initiative (NIPI) has been lunched in 2013

 Under this scheme every pregnant woman during ANC is to

be given iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets for six months, and
six months post-partum. Pregnant women, who are found to
be clinically anaemic.

 To tackle the problem of anemia due to malaria particularly

in pregnant women and children, Long Lasting Insecticide
Nets (LLINs) and Insecticide Treated Bed Nets (ITBNs) are
being distributed in endemic areas as well.
