Operation Scenarios
Operational Data vs. Network Data
Network Data:
• Set of components that make up the power system model
• Component parameters change infrequently
• Example: component connectivity, rating etc.
Operational Data:
• Set of data that determines the operating point
• Changes frequently
• Example: demand levels, generation dispatches, voltage
magnitude setpoints, circuit breaker statuses, tap positions, etc.
Operation Scenarios
• An Operation Scenario is a collection of network operational data.
• Properties of Operation Scenarios in PowerFactory:
• An Operation Scenario can be activated and deactivated.
• When active the complete set of operational data is applied to the
network model.
• When inactive, model returns to (base) network model
• Operation Scenarios must be saved by the user, otherwise changes
discarded.
Operation Scenarios & Data Subsets
• The set of operational data that defines an operation scenario is
classified in Data Subsets, for example:
Variations
Variation vs. Operation Scenario

Variation Operation Scenario

Network Model Changes Operational Data Changes

Several Variations can be active Only one Scenario active at any time
simultaneously

Mainly for Expansion Planning Mainly for Operational Planning

Variation ≠ Operation Scenario

Network Model: Variations
Variations represent network topology
changes.
Expansion stages represent phased
topology changes.
Application:
• Network expansion
• Different planning possibilities
Definition:
• Variations are defined in terms of
Expansion Stages
• Status of Expansion Stages depends on
time

Study Cases
Study Cases
• The Study Case specifies the grids, operation scenarios, variations
and calculation options to use for a study.
• Therefore, the study case holds:
• Links to active grids, operation scenarios and variations
• Calculation command definitions (Load-flow settings, etc.)
• Results of calculations
• Outage definitions for contingency analysis
• Graphical settings
• etc.
• A concept of study case allows the user to reproduce results.
Study Cases (examples)

• PLUS: each SC has a study time

• PLUS: each SC has calculation options
• PLUS: each SC may have results, sets etc.
