• Most surgeons feel that it offers little advantage over the simple
repair that the prosthesis overlies and that it is typically associated with a
similarly disappointing recurrence rate of up to 25%.
• In fact, a true tension-free repair might not be ideal in the anterior abdominal wall.
• The technique was promulgated by French surgeons Jean Rives and René
Stoppa in the 1970s as a method to address large incisional hernias.
• Only one trial was eligible for inclusion in the review with a total of 24 patients
randomised to an electrified drain (12 patients) compared with a corrugated drain
(12 patients). There were no statistically significant differences
between the groups for wound infection or in the length of
stay in hospital.
